Penn State's NSF Center for Health Organization Transformation is a vibrant organization that has been focused on creating healthcare solutions through collaborative research, education, and outreach. In January 2011, we were the recipient of a five-year award to become a site of the NSF I/UCRC Center for Health Organization Transformation (CHOT) which aims to advance knowledge and practice of tra
nsformational strategies in evidence-based management, information technology, clinical practice, and organizational learning through cooperative research among universities, health systems, and other health-related industries. Our work has emphasized three main areas of healthcare delivery: Patient-Centered Interventions; Technology and Informatics; and Operational Efficiency and Improvement Analytics. Through this research, we have developed breakthroughs across a range of challenges:
-care coordination for patients with chronic kidney disease
-financial incentives to reduce hospital associated infections
-physician decision making for obesity counseling
-prediction of early onset Parkinson’s disease
-mobile health interventions for teen risk behaviors
-no-wait Emergency Department at Hershey Medical Center
PSU CHOT has received financial support from the Office of the Vice President for Research as well as the deans of the colleges of Medicine, Engineering, Health and Human Development, Information Sciences and Technology, and Nursing. In addition, Siemens, has provided generous financial support for our scholars and annual workshop. Though our efforts, we have developed an infrastructure for connecting faculty and students at Penn State as well as engaging industry professionals on the urgent needs facing our healthcare system. We are pleased that CHOT has become the driving force behind healthcare delivery research at Penn State.
