Earlier this month, The McCourtney Institute for Democracy welcomed Joy Mayer and Mollie Muchna of Trusting News to University Park to accept the 2026 Brown Democracy Medal. 🏅

Against a backdrop of rapidly declining trust in news sources among Americans, Trusting News is the first media organization to receive the medal.

To combat this decline, Trusting News helps journalists and newsrooms across the country earn audience trust by explaining how they make decisions and the ethical standards that guide their work, things often invisible to the public.

During their visit, Mayer and Muchna delivered the annual Brown Medal lecture, “The Transparency Imperative: Journalism, Trust, and the Future of an Informed Democracy.” They also spent time with Penn State students by visiting several classes. Their message was that journalism deserves celebration and that it also needs to keep improving in order to fulfill its public service mission. Both ideas can be true at once.

Their book ‘The Transparency Imperative’, written with Trusting News assistant director Lynn Walsh, is also out now.

Penn State student Madeline Shanafelt spent this summer gaining research experience in education policy through her internship with MDRC! 💙🙌

As a Gueron Intern, Shanafelt contributed to projects focused on education and health care in rural communities, where she gained experience in data analysis, qualitative coding and evaluation research.

“I really love the kind of work I get to do, and I've had a lot of experiences to meet people and network that I otherwise wouldn't have,” said Shanafelt. “It’s a lot of work, but it’s really rewarding.”

This summer, Dawson Glogau took his Penn State education beyond the classroom and into the world of public policy.

As a Political Science and History major, Dawson worked with the Political and Policy Team at the Jewish Democratic Council of America, gaining hands-on experience with policy research, congressional hearings, elections, and advocacy.

From working on issues affecting rural communities to attending meetings on Capitol Hill, Dawson’s experience showed him the impact that policy can have on the communities he cares about. 💙

His internship also taught him the importance of resilience, communication, and knowing that you deserve to have a seat at the table.

With support from the inaugural Semester in Washington Program, housed in the Department of Political Science, Dawson was able to make the most of his experience in D.C. 🎓

Penn State Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Demography Jennifer Van Hook has been elected president of the Population Association of America (PAA).

Jennifer will serve as president-elect in 2027, president in 2028 and past president in 2029 of the 96-year-old professional organization, which is dedicated to promoting and supporting high-quality population research. Its 3,000 members include demographers, sociologists, economists, public health professionals and others with an interest in the field.

She’s the first Penn State faculty member to serve as PAA president, although several former faculty members were elected to the position after leaving the University.

A PAA member since 1991, Jennifer said she’s never missed a meeting.

“This is a big honor for me,” she said. “The PAA has been my professional home for my entire career. I owe a lot to PAA and am happy to give back to the organization as president.”

Enjoy pumpkin painting, cookie decorating, costume contests, murder mystery games, scary movies, music, and more. Plus, we'll have free pizza, candy, and apple c***r!

Every first-gen journey is unique, and we want to hear yours! 💙

As we prepare for National First-Generation College Celebration Week in November, we're inviting first-gen students, faculty, staff, and alumni to share their experiences and what being first-gen means to them.

Are you first-gen? Tell us a little about your journey in the comments! We'd love to celebrate the stories that make up our Penn State Liberal Arts community.

We also hope to see our first-gen students at the First-Gen Trailblazers panel on Wednesday, October 21, from 4:30–6:00 p.m. in 115 Keller Building. Join us for a student panel discussion and Q&A. Food will be provided!

In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), the R-VOICE Center invites Penn Staters to wear purple on Thursday, October 15. The R-VOICE Center will also be tabling in the HUB-Robeson Center from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at the inside tables near the Po***ck Road entrance. Stop by to connect with our team, learn more about DVAM, and explore ways to support survivors and promote healthy relationships.
