Today, Dr. Kathy Oquelí McGraw and her class were honored that Pastor Matt Tipton came in to speak on the topic of the Christian perspective and response to suffering, pain, and trauma for Tulane's SOWK 2510 - "Making Meaning of Trauma" class.

Matt Tipton is the pastor of Metairie Church and the director of First Hope Christian Ministries.

A few weeks ago Sheila Gold, the Executive Director of Admissions and Student Affairs from the Tulane School of Social Work, visited the SOWK 1000 - Trauma! class to share about the many opportunities within the program. From pursuing a Master's in Social Work to the Disaster Resilience Leadership Academy, TSSW offers diverse programming for professional development and graduate level learning.

This week in the hybrid section of Trauma! A Survey Course students discussed campus sexual assault. They shared resources as well as ideas to improve safety at Tulane including more lighting, active security, bystander education, mandatory education for student organizations, and seminars on sexual assault.

On Tuesday in SOWK 1000: Trauma! A Survey Course, we discussed the issue of school shootings. Students named various incidences of school shootings from news coverage, discussed common features, and applied their growing understanding of trauma to these events.

My class invited the U.S. and State Senators and Representatives (both Democrats and Republicans) to our class, SOWK 2000 - Introduction to Social Policy & Practice.

My class was honored on Tuesday, October 2, 2018 to have State Senator Norby Chabert come to our classroom at Tulane University and Tulane SocialWork to give a presentation on social policies and politics in Louisiana. - Dr. Kathy Oquelí McGraw

This week the SOWK 1000 TRAUMA! A SURVEY COURSE learned about PTSD. Students discussed the various signs and symptoms of PTSD and also shared personal stories of people they knew experiencing PTSD.

Students offered many examples of resilience in class today. One group gave the following definition: Resilience is harnessing the energy from negative experiences to take control of your life through goal setting, helping others, and sharing experiences.
