The Shain Library recognizes and celebrates Indigenous People’s Day today. In celebration, here are a few books that share stories on different indigenous experiences. The books are available for check out.

Connecticut College acknowledges that we currently occupy and honor the Native people who were its first inhabitants. Specifically, we honor the Mashantucket Pequots, Eastern Pequots, Mohegans, and other Native nations who are indigenous to Nameaug, now called New London, and the surrounding Coastal Algonquin, also known as the “Long Island Sound Region.”

Another installation in our series on the new street names!

The access road to Shain Library is now Sweetgum Court - and there is a sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua) in the courtyard on its north side! Sweetgums have distinctive star-shaped leaves and spiky fruits, and turn a beautiful red in fall. Its wood is frequently used for lumber, and its resin has historically been used to make chewing gum!

When Linda Lear ‘62 published her definitive biography of Rachel Carson, Witness for Nature, in 1997, she received invaluable assistance from many people who had known and worked with Rachel Carson over the course of her career. Perhaps none was as important to Dr. Lear’s work as Shirley Briggs. Shirley Briggs was a colleague of Carson’s at the US Fish and Wildlife Service and remained a close friend afterwards. After Carson’s early death from breast cancer in 1964, Briggs founded the Rachel Carson Council to serve as the guardian of Carson’s memory and advocate of her causes. Through her diary entries, correspondence, photographs, sketches, and interviews, Briggs provided key insights to Dr. Lear into Carson’s trajectory from a U.S. government employee to a beloved popularizer of oceanography to one of the founders of the modern environmental movement.

The Linda Lear Center stewards a small collection of Shirley Brigg’s materials, including a drawn cartoon of her and Rachel on a trip together and her personal signed copy of Silent Spring.

Join us for our upcoming workshop “Can I Use AI For This? Asking The Right Questions and Thinking Critically”. There will be two sessions held on September 18th and 22nd from 2:45 - 3:45 pm at the Visualization Wall.

This workshop helps students navigate course-by-course AI expectations, avoid academic integrity confusion, protect their privacy, and make informed choices about whether, when, and how to use AI tools for class.

The session takes a neutral, practical approach. It does not frame AI as always good or always bad. Instead, it encourages students to understand course expectations, ask better questions, certify information, disclose AI use when appropriate, and think critically about privacy and ethics. See you there!
