U of SC Sigma Delta Pi & Gamecock Spanish Club Student Organizations at the University of South Carolina: Sigma Delta Pi Chi Capítulo (National Hispanic Honor Society) and the Gamecock Spanish Club

Weekly meeting time/location: TBA
Who We Are – Sigma Delta Pi:
The National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society (La Sociedad Nacional Honoraria Hispánica), was established on November 14, 1919, at the University of California in Berkeley. Its insignia is the royal seal of Fernando and Isabel, representing Castille, León and Aragón. The Society’s colors are red and gold and its flower is the red carnation. Chi Chapter History:
Founded January 30, 1931 the University of South Carolina’s Chi Chapter of Sigma Delta Pi has held a long standing role in being an ambassador for the University’s Spanish Department and has recently expanded to hold numerous Hispanic language, literature, and culture events open to the entire student body and Columbia community. Members are eligible for several scholarship opportunities and help sponsor events which encourage all students to develop an interest in and actively engage in Hispanic culture. Our members also serve as tutors, engage in community service, and take an active role in promoting the study of Spanish language and Hispanic culture. The chapter’s banner events include also the “Taste of Latin” (closing event of Hispanic Heritage Month), Spanish Career Night, and the prestigious High School Spanish Achievement Award Program. In addition to being the University’s only Spanish Honor Society, our chapter serves as the constitutional parent organization to the Gamecock Spanish Club which is ideal for students who do not yet meet the requirements for membership in the Honor society. The Chi Chapter also boasts the nation’s first Sigma Delta Pi Alumnus Chapter since 1956, Los Paladines.
