The October Core image of the month features confocal images of pericytes, a type of cell that lines capillaries and other vascular structures in the body. Particularly, these cells are an important component of the blood-brain barrier. To study how the immune response impacts mitochondrial networks within these cells, the researchers induced inflammation using a low dose of IL-1β (green). The z-stack is presented as a 2D depth coded image. The image was taken on the ZEISS Microscopy LSM 900 airyscan detector and deconvolved with Huygens deconvolution software.
