Alexis Gaydos, a senior in NRES, recently completed a short-term study abroad program in South Africa! Learn more about her experience below and join us TOMORROW for our NRES 385/ANSC 398 information session!

Alexis’s Testimonial:
“One of the biggest things I learned during this trip was that conservation biology is by far, way more complicated than simply protecting endangered animals. Before traveling to South Africa, I viewed wildlife conservation as mostly working with animals and vets. My thought process of monitors was that their work involved monitoring what they see, camera trapping, population tracking, and calling vets. While those things are included in their job description, they do so much more. Wildlife managers must balance the ecosystem's health, human safety, tourism, and create local community relationships all at the same time.”

Sri Lanka is home to an extraordinary variety of wildlife, including Asian elephants, leopards, primates, sea turtles, marine mammals, peacocks, ornamental fish, and pollinators such as honey bees. Students will travel across the country to observe these animals in their natural habitats, visit research and conservation facilities, engage with veterinary and wildlife professionals, and explore how cultural traditions influence animal welfare and conservation policies.
