Congratulations to ChBE alumnus Liangfang Zhang, who has been awarded a 2026 MacArthur Fellowship, commonly known as a “genius grant,” from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.

According to the MacArthur Foundation, the aim of the Fellows Program is to "identify extraordinarily creative individuals with a track record of excellence in a field of scholarship or area of practice, who demonstrate the ability to impact society in significant and beneficial ways through their pioneering work or the rigor of their contributions."

We are incredibly proud to see Liangfang receive this prestigious recognition!

Chemical and biomolecular engineering alum Liam Flood (BS 20) was a former chimesplayer at Altgeld Hall, where his love for this campus tradition inspired him to write an extensive history of the building and its music. Through his extensive research, Flood hopes that next generation will keep the musical bells alive.

When Liam Flood (BS, ’20, chemical and biomolecular engineering) first toured the University of Illinois as a high school student, he heard plenty of campus legends about Altgeld Hall.

A historic milestone.

The Cancer Center at Illinois has been designated a Basic Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute, the first designation of this kind in nearly 40 years.

This recognition places CCIL among the most elite cancer research institutions in the country and reflects a bold, interdisciplinary approach that is redefining how we understand, detect, and treat cancer.

This a major step forward for the future of cancer research. Here at ChBE, we are proud to be part of this moment! Cancer Center at Illinois
