Hi Everyone! Medical students will be hosting one on one sessions for students to go in and ask questions, get help on applications, etc. The link to sign up for that is below, along with instructions sent to me from the AMSA med student chapter president. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at [email protected]!

The American Medical Student Association is offering one-on-ones with current medical students to help you think about and shape your medical school personal statement! Sign up for one of the times and dates at the link below for an hour of discussion to help you gather ideas, formulate a writing plan, and articulate the key things you need to say.

How it works:
1. Sign up for a date and time below using the link to the google doc.

2. At least three days in advance, email the medical student you are meeting with to introduce yourself and confirm the location.

3. Show up ready to talk!

SIGN UP HERE: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1fV9LkbqwWNTKk-SnLhQcjMn11udiKaw7hLEKte26KYk/edit?usp=sharing

How to prepare:
§ These sessions are designed for students at all stages in the writing process. You do not need to have a first draft of your statement written to participate—in fact, we encourage you to schedule a session prior to doing any writing!

§ This is NOT an interview. Please wear whatever you are comfortable in, and strive to be your genuine self. We are here to help you explore your own motivations for going to med school, not for you to impress us.

§ The student you are meeting with will ask you questions about why you want to go to medical school, what you know about medicine, what experiences have shaped your desire to go into medicine, what you like and dislike about medicine, and more. Please do not prepare answers to any questions, but if you haven’t ever thought about these things before, it’s a good idea to spend some time thinking about them informally prior to meeting with us.

A few final notes:
§ Students may not sign up for more than one timeslot. If you sign up for more than one, all of your selected times will be cleared for other students to take.

§ If all slots are taken, we will do our best to offer additional times, but we can’t guarantee this.

§ Please do not sign up for any times that you may not be able to make. Our students are incredibly busy and are being generous with their time to offer you this opportunity.

§ Please note the location before you sign up. Some students may prefer to meet you off campus, so if you select one of these options, make sure you are able to transport yourself to the location of the meeting.

§ Priority will be given to students who are applying to medical school in 2017. If you are applying in 2018, please go ahead and sign up as we have plenty of spots currently, but if we run out of room, we may ask you to wait until next year!

Sheet1 Please read before signing up! The available slots are listed below. Please add your name, email address, and the calendar year in which you plan to apply to med school in the appropriate columns on the right. The med student you are meeting with will be notified that you have signed up....

If you're interested in going to National Convention please let me know before February 10th. The deadline to submit a group application for discounted rates is February 15th, so I'd like to know how many people are going as early as possible so we can send that in advance.

The cost should range somewhere between $500-$700. AMSA covers the hotel so you'd only be responsible for airfare and registration. If we get at least five people to go registration goes down to $125 per person. Also keep in mind that you can be reimbursed some of that money through the SORF application. I want to say you'll be able to get about 50% back but I'm not too sure.

Convention has a lot of benefits and I"d definitely encourage people to go! THERE'S LOTS OF FREE STUFF. LIKE A LOT OF IT. Also the break out sessions had really helpful general application advice and some other really interesting topics. There's a lot of admissions councilors who you can talk to for information about their schools as well. The AMCAS application also has a section where you can put down conventions that you attending, and going to this would count under that. You'll also receive points for attending. If you want more information check out the link below, and email me at [email protected] if you have any questions!
