Tonight, the Zonta Club of Utica presented awards to 4 outstanding high school students. We are so inspired by the accomplishments and goals of these young people.
Jean M. C**n Humanitarian Award: Sawyer Michel from Whitesboro, who also is the recipient of Zonta Zonta International District 2 award in this category. Sawyer has made numerous substantial contributions to his local community and beyond. He raised over $1000 and biked 100 miles to raise awareness for missing and exploited children. As part of the NYS Mentoring Program, Sawyer mentored a middle school student through tutoring, activities and goal-setting. He has also worked as a volunteer EMT to provide emergency pre-hospital care to persons in need. He will be attending Cornell University to major in pre-med.
Young Women in Leadership: Jenna Herron from Notre Dame/Utica.Jenna has exemplified leadership through her school and community. As Chief Petty Officer in her NJROTC, she assists with cadet training. She is a leader on her basketball team, Student Council, participates in Campus Ministry and is a lector at her church. She has headed coat and food drives and donated and worked at ROTC sponsored blood drives.
Promise Award: Truth Bullock (Proctor)
Through Young Scholars, Truth became involved in both STEAM and healthcare interships which has inspired her goal to attend medical school. She frequently volunteers her free time to help other in Oneida County including the Morrow Warming Center, the Jewish Community Center, the Utica Zoo and the New Hartford Public Library. At school she is a member of the Chemistry Club and Student Council. She has applied to Utica University and Buffalo State.
Promise Award: Zarlashta Rahim Jan (Proctor) will be graduating from Thomas R Proctor Senior Highschool in June of this year. She plans to pursue a degree in Biology with a minor in political science. She has been described as a great leader with a promising future. Her participation in the Model United Nations Club, international club, environmental science club and on the speech and Debate team have all led to her continued success as a future leader in her community.
We wish all of these young leaders great success and we expect to hear more for them as their careers flourish.
