Utica “University” has officially ended the Spanish major. There are no longer any tenured/tenure track faculty. There is no longer a language requirement for graduation. The money I had earmarked for Spanish majors studying in Latin America will be sent elsewhere. Utica “University” students will be able to graduate without having to ever deal with a non-English speaker.

This is my last post as I am now officially retired from Utica College. I had hoped to pass this along to my replacement but there was a failed search. So let these be my parting words: I have tried over my 22 years at Utica College (and 11 years prior to that) to share my interests in Latin American cultures and civilizations through literature, film, language classes and travel opportunities. I leave my department in a tenuous state with an uncertain future. I hope that clear and rational minds will prevail.
