These are the faces of the future of EMS. 🚑

Our high school and college EMT students are putting in the work, building their skills, and taking their first steps into emergency medical services. For some, this is the beginning of a career. For others, it may be the first step toward becoming a paramedic, nurse, firefighter, or another healthcare professional.

We’re proud to have our Southwest Texas College Mobile Training Unit as part of their education, giving students another opportunity to train in an environment that brings classroom learning closer to the real world.

Different paths. Different goals. One starting point: EMT.

We’re proud of this group and excited to see where EMS takes them.

🚑 A New Look for a Unit With a Lot of History

Our SWTX EMS Program mobile training unit recently got an upgrade!

The unit now features the current Southwest Texas College logo, updated lighting, and a few other touches that give it a fresh look while keeping it ready for what matters most—training EMT and Paramedic students.

This unit has a history worth recognizing. It was donated to our program in 2018 by Trey and Rhett Pegues, owners of Alamo Ambulance. Although Alamo Ambulance is no longer in service, the company served and contributed to our community and surrounding counties for many years. Their donation gave this ambulance a second purpose, and we are grateful that it continues to be part of EMS education in our area.

Instead of answering calls, its job now is to give students a realistic environment to practice patient care, teamwork, equipment use, loading and unloading, and the challenges that come with working in the back of an ambulance.

Eight years after it was donated, it is still serving our communities—just in a different way.

We’re proud to give it an updated look and put it back to work training our current and future EMTs and Paramedics at Southwest Texas College.

A big thank-you to Trey and Rhett Pegues for a donation that continues to make an impact on the next generation of EMS professionals.

Taking it back to August 2017…

Back when we were still Southwest Texas Junior College, this was the very first EMT class held on the Uvalde campus.

The SWTX EMS Program had gotten its start just a few months earlier, in Spring 2017, on our Eagle Pass campus. What started with EMT grew from there. In 2022, we welcomed our inaugural Paramedic class, opening a whole new chapter for the program.

Fast-forward to Fall 2026, and it’s pretty incredible to see where we are now. What began as a new EMS program has grown into a CAAHEP-accredited Paramedic program, upon the recommendation of CoAEMSP—a milestone that reflects years of work building the program, strengthening our curriculum and clinical experiences, and meeting the national standards for paramedic education.

Today, our Eagle Pass campus is home to our 4th Paramedic class, our first-ever high school EMT class, and our college EMT courses have returned to Eagle Pass for the fall semesters while continuing in Uvalde during the spring.

A lot has changed since this picture was taken. New students, new instructors, new partnerships, new opportunities—and a whole lot of people have had a hand in getting us here.

Growth has happened. And we aren’t finished yet.

Within the next week or two, we’ll have another pretty big reveal to share. 👀

Stay tuned. The SWTX EMS Program is still growing.

The SWTX EMS Program is proud to recognize Luis Arroyo on successfully passing the National Registry Paramedic (NREMT) exam and officially becoming a Nationally Registered Paramedic.

This milestone reflects a year and a half of dedication in the classroom, long hours during clinical rotations, and a demanding field internship that prepared him for the realities of paramedicine. The work wasn’t easy, but Luis stayed the course and earned every bit of this accomplishment.

Luis is currently serving the community as a member of Val Verde EMS in Del Rio, where he’ll continue putting the knowledge and skills he developed throughout the program into practice while caring for patients when they need it most.

Congratulations, Luis, on this well-earned achievement. Your SWTX EMS family is proud of you and excited to watch your career continue to grow.

Congratulations, Paramedic Arroyo!

A new look is coming to the SWTX EMS Program! 🚑🚑

Our new EMS entrance doors are ready to welcome students as they begin the next semester. Designed to resemble the rear of an ambulance, these doors reflect the mission of our program and the profession our students are preparing to enter.

Every student who walks through these doors is taking another step toward a career dedicated to serving others.

Educate. Prepare. Serve. Save Lives.

We can’t wait to welcome and meet our newest future EMTs and Paramedics this fall. The future of EMS starts here! 🚑❤️🩺

The SWTX EMS Program Advisory Committee convened today with our respected clinical and EMS partners from Eagle Pass and nearby communities. We sincerely appreciate the ongoing support and collaboration of the agencies and healthcare professionals dedicated to the education, achievement, and future success of our students.

During the meeting, the committee discussed recent program developments, including student retention and National Registry pass rates, projected enrollment, program objectives and strategic initiatives, clinical and field training opportunities, employer input, regional workforce demands, and findings from our recent Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) audit. We also explored ways to further strengthen partnerships, enrich student learning experiences, and ensure our graduates are fully prepared to deliver high-quality patient care from the start of their careers.

These meetings are essential to sustaining a strong EMS education program, as they bring together educators, EMS leaders, healthcare partners, and community stakeholders to ensure our curriculum remains aligned with the evolving needs of the profession.

We extend our gratitude to all who participated and shared their time, knowledge, and dedication to the continued growth of the SWTX EMS Program. Together, we are shaping the next generation of EMS professionals to serve our communities with skill, compassion, and excellence.

🎉 Great things are happening this fall at the SWTX EMS Program! 🚑

We are excited to announce that both our EMT and Paramedic programs are officially full for the Fall semester! The response from our communities has been incredible, and we are grateful for the trust our students place in us as they begin their EMS careers.

Our Spring EMT course is already building a waitlist, so if you’re interested in becoming an EMT, we encourage you to reach out early for information about the enrollment process and program requirements.

We are also proud to welcome Eagle Pass ISD High School EMT students to our campus this year through our partnership. We look forward to helping these students begin their journey into emergency medical services.

When we started planning for this year, we hoped for a little growth. Through hard work, dedication, and the support of our faculty, students, clinical partners, and community, we didn’t just grow—we THRIVED!

Thank you to everyone who continues to support the SWTX EMS Program. We can’t wait to see what this semester has in store!
