Heard of the "Readiness Paradox"?

Even as high school graduation numbers continue to rise, teenagers are increasingly uncertain about what's next.

This recent article in Community College Daily notes that "Seventy-seven percent of recent high school graduates say they feel only moderately, slightly or not at all prepared for life after high school . . . up from 72% just a year earlier."

This uncertainty is causing many to question traditional post-secondary pathways, as "the four-year college default that once captured nearly three-quarters of graduating seniors now holds barely a plurality."

Since 2018, "interest in nondegree pathways like trade and technical school, apprenticeships and bootcamps has grown from 12% to 38%" among teens. Parental attitudes are also shifting, with preference for their child pursing traditional college dropping from 74% in 2019 to 58% in 2025.

This shift in attitudes can be attributed to various factors, but the article offers several examples and guiding principles to argue that community colleges are uniquely positioned to "structurally and mission-wise, to close more of the gap than any other part of the system."
