The mission of the TUC Public Health Program is to develop outstanding public health professionals who support health as a human right, including physical, mental and social well-being, and address the historical roots and structural causes of injustice in collaboration with all communities. This mission is achieved by employing a multidimensional program of study that combines a broad public heal
th base with specific training in three specialty concentrations: Community Action for Health, Global Health and Health Equity and Criminal Justice. The Community Action for Health (CAH) Concentration provides students with a broad-based foundation in the fundamentals of public health and prepares students to work with communities to achieve health equity through the promotion of social justice policies and practices. The CAH Concentration is designed for those who are most interested in working for state and local health departments and other public health focused organizations. The study of global health involves taking the view that health problems must be considered from a truly international perspective and implicit in that is the understanding that the health situation of one population affects other populations as well. Hence, without a healthy global community there is no healthy local or regional community. The Global Health Concentration prepares students to be effective leaders and advocates for global health. Our curriculum reflects the current realities of health around the world and reinforces the links between countries at different stages of economic development. Through practical work in complex international settings, students gain more understanding of global health including the challenges, the complexity of solutions, and the role of global health professionals as agents of change. Touro University California’s MPH Program is the first graduate program, accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) to offer an MPH concentration in Health Equity and Criminal Justice (HECJ). Framed within core public health concepts, the HECJ Concentration focuses on the intersection of health and the U.S. justice system and addresses the public health impacts of criminal justice involvement and mass incarceration on individuals, families and communities. Students are provided with a specialized curriculum centered on the criminal justice system, strategies for prevention and reduction of justice involvement, correctional health systems, reentry and recidivism, and social and community impacts of incarceration.
