If so, apply to the Balanced Man Scholarship using the link in our bio!

The Balanced Man Scholarship is offered by the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, to recognize strong academics, character, and virtue of the incoming men of Valparaiso University. This year, the fraternity is offering $3,500 in scholarships to be awarded to a select group of the most balanced men on campus. Membership in SigEp is neither required nor expected to apply or win scholarship money.

Huge congratulations to Brothers Evan Gustafson (’26) and Eli Conklin (’27) on winning the undergraduate first prize for posters at Valparaiso University’s Symposium on Research and Creative Expression.

“Our project analyzed tornado emergencies, the highest level of tornado warning the National Weather Service (NWS) can put out. Since its formal introduction in 2014, a set of guidelines were also released to assist NWS forecasters to issue tornado emergencies. We analyzed 89 tornado emergency cases from 2014 to 2023 and found only 4 cases met the recommended guidelines. However, the majority of tornadoes that a tornado emergency was issued for were significant. Thus, we are currently working on a qualitative analysis of the decision making process to issue a tornado emergency through informal interviews of NWS forecasters.”
