SPURA is a multi-disciplinary research program providing undergraduate students the opportunity to work with a faculty mentor on a dedicated research project in the area of substance use disorder or mental health. Meet Margaret! She and 13 other USD students were chosen to be a part of this year's UDiscover Summer Research cohort. The program is a project of the Council for Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship, designed to give undergraduate students in any academic field experience in conducting a scholarly research project under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Students present their findings along with SPURA students during a poster session held by the South Dakota INBRE Convocation on July 31, 2026. Students will also present their research at IdeaFest in the spring, April 7 to 8, 2027.

Meet Desiree, a NOLOP Summer Research Scholar!

This summer she'll be working in Dr. Rezvani’s colon cancer research lab. She's always been fascinated by cancer biology, and while cancer isn’t fully curable yet, she wants to help develop treatments that are more effective and safer than those currently available. She was especially drawn to this lab because it focuses on colorectal cancer. Early-onset colorectal cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in patients under the age of 50 in the U.S., and what’s especially concerning is that it’s increasingly affecting people her age.
