Department of Political Science, Criminal Justice, & International Studies www.usd.edu The Farber Fund was started on May 8, 1976, upon the retirement of William O. (Doc) Farber, Ph.D.

This page has been set up by the Political Science, Criminal Justice, and International Studies Department at USD to continue to inform friends of Doc Farber the goings-on of the department and the fund. Doc Farber had been associated with USD since the fall of 1935 and had served as chairman of the Department of Government (later Political Science) for 38 years. Now totaling approximately $4.5 mi

llion, the Farber Fund provides more than $170,000 each year for political science, criminal justice and international studies majors to attend conferences, participate in study tours, complete internships, travel abroad and conduct research. We know of no other university in the nation with this amount of money available in a single department for students.

Congratulations to our alumnus, Caleb Swanson, on being named a 2026 Knight-Hennessy Scholar at Stanford University, where he will attend law school!

Caleb Swanson, a 2024 graduate of the University of South Dakota, has been selected as a 2026 Knight-Hennessy Scholar by Stanford University.

Afomiya Dejene, a sophomore majoring in our Criminal Justice Studies program, will speak on April 23, 2026, as part of TEDx Sioux Falls at the Washington Pavilion. In “The Power of Conversation,” Dejene will discuss the “cultural framework of intentionality” within her Ethiopian heritage. She says the best way to “dismantle bias” and gain a mutual understanding with one another is to have patience for “real dialogue” and “genuine presence.” Get your tickets today!
