This is a celebration of the Remembering Recreation oral history project, which is adding 12 new oral histories to the South Dakota Oral History Project. We received a Civic Engagement Grant from the Chiesman Center for Democracy, which allowed us to work with a cohort of 6 South Dakotans who attended workshops on oral history best practices and interview techniques before interviewing 2 people each.

The event on Thursday at 1 pm will include a variety of images, sound, excerpts from the interviews, and activities.

The University Libraries at the University of South Dakota is seeking entries for “Altered Book IX: Material, Structure, Concept,” its ninth international biennial altered book exhibition, on view Aug. 23, 2027, through Jan. 3, 2028.

The Art and Exhibits Committee, University Libraries, is now taking entries through March 5, 2027, for Altered Book 9: Material, Structure, Concept (formerly known as Bound and Unbound: Altered Book Exhibition.)

We are pleased to have Taína H. Cruz as juror.

Taína H. Cruz is an American artist who lives and works in New Haven, Connecticut. Cruz creates immersive worlds in which the familiar becomes unstable and everyday experience slips into something more uncanny. Informed by growing up in New York and coming of age within networked image culture, her practice considers transformation and the shifting boundaries between physical and imagined worlds.

Cruz was selected for the 2026 Whitney Biennial, where her paintings and a site-specific wall drawing were featured alongside her monumental billboard painting, I Saw the Future and It Smiled Back, installed across from the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Her recent exhibitions include “Greater New York” at MoMA PS1, New York (2026); the Whitney Biennial, New York (2026); the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (2025); MMK Frankfurt (2025); and Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler, Berlin (2024). Cruz has presented solo exhibitions with Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler, Berlin; Housing Gallery, New York; and Embajada, San Juan.

As inspiration for artists responding to the call, Cruz shared a passage from Rainer Maria Rilke’s Letters to a Young Poet: “Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now.”

There are no restrictions for when works were/are made. There are no fees to enter the exhibition, and selected works will be on display at USD’s University Libraries second floor exhibition cases from Aug. 23, 2027, through Jan. 3, 2028, as well as entered into the altered book collection on the Digital Library of South Dakota at https://explore.digitalsd.org and the Digital Public Library of America at https://dp.la. Atiq Rehman, the library GRA for the VR Lab won a competitive poster competition! The competition was part of the 2026 Artificial Intelligence Symposium at the University of South Dakota, organized by the Department of Computer Science. There were more than 100 submissions, and around 50+ research posters were presented at the symposium.

His group's poster, titled “A Controlled Benchmark for Deployable Land-Cover Pattern Analysis: Mapping the Efficiency–Accuracy Frontier of Classical CNN Encoders in High-Resolution Satellite Imagery,” received the Best Poster Award – First Place. The research focused on comparing different deep-learning models for satellite land-cover analysis and identifying the model that provides the best balance between accuracy and computational efficiency.
The symposium was held on September 8, 2026, at the Muenster University Center, University of South Dakota.

Tracey, a citizen of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, serves as General Counsel and Director of Legal Strategies at NDN Collective, a nonprofit organization that works to build the collective power of Indigenous peoples, communities, and nations. Prior to joining NDN Collective she was Attorney General for the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe. She has also practiced as a private attorney, focusing on tribal/state relations, jurisdictional issues, financial and real estate transactions, education, and community development matters for tribes. Tracey has shared her knowledge and experience with students at USD Knudson School of Law and at Oglala Lakota College as an adjunct professor. She holds a Juris Doctorate from Yale Law School and a Bachelor’s Degree in business administration and accounting.
