The Drowning in Dirt: Joseph Hutton and the Dust
Bowl is a traveling exhibition developed by South
Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum. It is funded in
part by the South Dakota Humanities Council.

The University Libraries at the University of South Dakota is bringing the art of Anna Mavromatis to the library, in an exhibit entitled “Once Upon a Time”, displayed in the library’s second floor display cases for the fall 2026 semester, August 24, 2026 - January 4, 2027. It is open to the public for viewing during library operating hours, which can be found online. She will also be on the USD Vermillion campus October 5, 2026, to speak with classes about her art, her writing and artistic processes, and will give a public talk open to everyone in the MUC from 4-5 p.m. The University Libraries Art and Exhibits Committee, English Department, Art Department, Theatre Department and the Opportunity Center are co-sponsors in supporting Mavromatis’ on-campus visit.

Mavromatis incorporates several elements such as costumes and architecture, altered books, and her writing process into her art. She states that her works “come to her from needs we all share: seeking to understand the whys and hows of one's existence. Trying to distinguish ages old lies from truths, while pursuing a path to know thyself. Concentrating in ways to correct past societal sins prohibiting beings in reaching their potential. Giving testimony to injustices inflicted through the age-old human need assessing others' worth based in gender, race, nationality.”

USD students Jillan Murphy from the M.S. program in Biology, Susan Anderson, a PhD candidate in Biology and Zoe Donelan, a Second-Year Medical Student, members of the Environmental Club - Bird Safe USD present their work in the first floor gallery of the library from 8/24/2026 to 9/24/2026. Every year in North America, up to 1 billion birds die when they collide with windows. The artists state that windows can be made safe by disrupting their reflectivity. Painted windows here are decorated to bird-safe standards, but simpler, elegant options exist for commercial windows.
