Launched statewide, Rural Health Forward prioritizes independent rural hospitals, community health centers, and Tribal health providers, ensuring they have access to essential workforce training and support. Addressing the health needs of South Dakota, a statewide partnership known as the South Dakota Center for Advancing Clinical and Translational Research (SD-ACT) will bring together three major partners, including the USD Sanford School of Medicine. SD-ACT will expand research capacity and improve health in South Dakota’s rural, frontier, Tribal and underserved communities.

After nine years leading the University of South Dakota, President Sheila K. Gestring has announced her retirement, effective June 21, 2027.

Throughout her career, President Gestring has remained focused on championing the university’s mission, supporting students and addressing workforce needs in the state. She has guided the university through critical periods of transformation, navigating challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and opportunities such as the establishment of USD – Sioux Falls as it exists today. Under her leadership, USD reached its highest-ever enrollment, now reporting three consecutive years with 10,000 students enrolled. The last nine years have also been shaped by President Gestring’s strong financial leadership that, paired with public and private support, has strengthened programs and facilities across the university. In reflecting on the past nine years, she credits the USD community with making these achievements possible and positioning the university for success in welcoming a new president.

We thank President Gestring for her visionary leadership and her steadfast commitment to the Coyote community.
