Check out Native American Studies Major, Nick Kennedy, and his experience as part of the Killam Fellowship.

"My time spent at the University of Calgary and in Alberta during my Killam Exchange was an unforgettable life-changing experience. Throughout my time at the University and during Fulbright orientation in Ottawa, I was constantly reminded of what makes Canada unique. I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn more about Canada’s efforts to create awareness regarding Truth and Reconciliation concerning Indian Residential Schools and also the rights of First Nations communities to exercise their treaty rights.
The knowledge I have learned at the University of Calgary has greatly enhanced my understanding of broader International Indigenous rights. While Canada and the U.S share an international border, they are both worlds apart in different aspects. The Indian Act, Royal Proclamation, and the numbered treaties all provide important legal distinctions that are different from the United States. I’m interested in looking further to how Indigenous rights can be expanded across the U.S-Canada border."

Applying for a Killam Fellowship through our open competition? Make sure you complete your application by tomorrow, Jan 31st!

Check out what Nicholas said of his experience in the 2022-23 academic year as a Killam Fellow:

Congratulations to our very own Native American Studies 2021 alum, Myah Jade RedHorse, on being selected for the prestigious Warren Fellowship. Red Horse graduated in in spring of 2021 and is finishing her first year in the Master of Arts in Secondary Education plus certification at USD. “Having a USD student selected to the fellowship means that South Dakota has a voice in one of the nationally renowned fellowships,” Jing Williams, Ph.D., associate professor of social studies education, said. “Myah Red Horse will represent USD, our state, and the native community, and she will be an asset to this year’s Warren Fellowship.”

The institute will educate participants about issues related to the Holocaust, including historical content, provided by Holocaust scholars, and pedagogical content, provided by faculty and museum educators.

“Attending the Warren Fellowship will provide me with a new historical lens and the necessary pedagogical tools to teach the Holocaust,” Red Horse said. “My goal is always to humanize history, and Naomi’s Warren’s experience of surviving three concentration camps during World War II seems unimaginable to many, but it is crucial for young people to know the stories of people who lived it.”

Congratulations to Nick Kennedy, a major in Native American Studies and history, on being selected for the Native American Undergraduate Museum Fellowship at the Minnesota Historical Society. We hope to learn more about your experience when you return this fall! Please check out the article:

“The relationship between Native peoples and the museum world is definitely changing,” Kennedy said. For example, he and fellow participants heard from guest speakers such as Tribal Historic Preservation Officers who work on behalf of Native American tribes through the National Park Service to preserve Indigenous cultural and historical assets. “In the past, tribal communities and museums have had a bad relationship due to colonization and archaeologists digging up Native American remains and taking objects into their collections,” he said. “We learned that the Tribal Historic Preservation Officers and archaeologists are now working together more effectively.”

Nick Kennedy, a history and Native American studies sophomore and Honors student at USD, is one of five undergraduate college students this summer participating remotely in the Native American Undergraduate Museum Fellowship.

Congratulations to Elle Findlay, a double major in Native American Studies and Anthropology, who has been accepted into the University of Montana’s Anthropology Master of Arts program with an emphasis on Cultural Heritage. Elle is currently working on her Native American Studies capstone paper, “The Indigenous Rights and Recognitions of Paha Sapa”, which examines contestations over the Black Hills and how legislation has regulated access by Lakota peoples and the American public. Her paper also explores how Lakota peoples have struggled against land development and tourism. Congrats and good luck on this next phase!
