It is a pleasure to welcome our featured guest artists:
BRIAN CORBIN: Brian Corbin holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Indiana University and a Master of Music in Clarinet Performance from Florida State University. His primary teachers include Howard Klug, Deborah Bish, and Jonathan Holden. Brian has performed with the Hawai'i Symphony Orchestra, Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, Ocala Symphony Orchestra, Valdosta Symphony Orchestra, Villages Philharmonic Orchestra, and Albany (GA) Symphony Orchestra.
DR. HOLLY HADDAD: Holly Haddad is a native of Roanoke, Virginia. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, her master’s from Ohio University, and her doctoral degree from The University of Arizona. Her major teachers include Robert Listokin, David Lewis, and Jerry Kirkbride. Holly has performed throughout the United States, Europe, and Mexico as a recitalist, soloist with orchestra, and chamber musician. She has appeared in venues ranging from Lincoln Center in New York, to the historic Gewandhaus in Leipzig, Germany. Before relocating to Vermillion, South Dakota in 2004, she was an Assistant Professor of Music at Southern Utah University as well as a performer with the Tony® award-winning Utah Shakespearean Festival. Currently, Holly is an academic advisor at The University of South Dakota where she works primarily with pre-med students. When she is not busy playing music or working with college students, Holly enjoys spending time with her family and friends and volunteering in her community. She has been the principal clarinetist of the Sioux City Municipal Band since 2015 and the principal clarinetist of the Sioux City Symphony since 2005.
DR. KARL KOLBECK: Karl Kolbeck serves as Professor of Woodwinds at Wayne State College in Nebraska. He holds degrees from Adams State College, The University of New Mexico, and Texas Tech University. His primary teachers include Barry McGinnis, Keith Lemmons, David Shea, and David Dees. Kolbeck has performed with numerous orchestras and other ensembles throughout Nebraska, Iowa, Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, and Arizona. He currently performs with the Sioux City Municipal Band, Crazy 8 Brass Band, Clarinet Spectrum, Northeast Area Jazz Ensemble and makes frequent appearances with the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra. As a founding member of the Black Box Trio and Trio Mezzklarno, Kolbeck is an advocate for the performance of new music and has been involved in several commissions and premieres. He has participated in recording projects for Summit Records and Naxos and has performed at conferences hosted by the International Clarinet Association, North American Saxophone Alliance, the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors, and the College Music Society. Kolbeck is a D’Addario Woodwinds Performing Artist.
DR. DEBORAH CHECK REEVES: Dr. Deborah Check Reeves is the Curator of Education and Woodwinds at the National Music Museum in Vermillion and Professor of Music at the University of South Dakota. She performs with the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra, Quintessential Winds, directs Tatag, the NMM's Javanese gamelan performance ensemble, and teaches USD graduate classes. She is the author of “Historically Speaking,” a quarterly column in The Clarinet, and has co-authored a number of articles in various journals, including Oregon Journal of the Social Studies, and Middle Level Learning. She has presented at several conferences such as the International Clarinet Association’s ClarinetFest, the American Musical Instrument Society, the Mountain Plains Museum Association and the Association of Academic Museums and Galleries. She served as Secretary of AMIS for ten years. She is the South Dakota state representative to ICA, and co-chair of MPMA’s EdCom.
DR. LUIS VIQUEZ: Latin-Grammy nominated clarinetist Dr. Luis Víquez is the clarinet professor at the University of South Dakota since 2016. He has appeared both as a soloist and as a chamber musician at major stages across the United States and Costa Rica, as well as in Taiwan, Guatemala, England, Honduras, Colombia, and Panama. Dr. Viquez is the former principal clarinetist of the Symphony Orchestra of Heredia and was also a member of the National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica. As a soloist, he has performed with the South Dakota Symphony, the Heredia Symphony, the Sioux City Municipal Band, the Truman Symphony Orchestra, and the Cherokee Symphony. He is the winner of the University of Costa Rica Honors Recital Competition in 2008 and 2009, the 2012 Missouri MMTA Graduate Woodwind Competition, the 2013 Truman Gold Medal Concerto Competition, the 2014 Robert Fountain Memorial Award, and was recently honored with the 2019 President's Award for Research Creativity at the University of South Dakota. He served as the principal clarinetist of the 2009 Latin American Youth Wind Orchestra (Manizales, Colombia), and was one of the four Latin American musicians selected to perform in the 2011 World Youth Wind Orchestra (Chiayi City, Taiwan). Prior to coming to the United States, Luis Víquez served on the faculty at the University of Costa Rica, and at the Municipal School of Music of Paraíso. In addition to his performing and teaching activities as a clarinetist, Dr. Víquez enjoys an internationally recognized career as a conductor. He is a Royal Global Clarinets and D'Addario Woodwinds performing artist and is the founder of the South Dakota Clarinet Day since its inception in the Spring of 2017.
