Lunchtime on the trail! Out on the range, a good lunch break didn't just happen—it took some serious work! This hard-working crew paused to cook up a hot meal using a couple of trusty Dutch ovens, washed down with fresh trail coffee.

This photo is estimated to have been taken in the 1930s or 1940s. The crew members are unidentified.

Community, fashion, and philanthropy came together at the Hotel Vernal for a special Cancer Tea, fashion show, and bridge social. It was sponsored by the Current Topics Club in 1970. The proceeds from this event went toward the Uintah County cancer drive.

Shown here: Mrs. Lynne King thanking United Air Lines’ Wayne Helgesen for setting the scene with gorgeous decorations. The models (Mrs. Levi Allen, Mrs. Ken Kier, and Cathy Price) stand in the background.

Do you collect postcards? The history of postcards is a long one. They have developed and gone through many iterations. For example, in late 1901, a new postal order changed the way the backs of postcards were printed by swapping out the wordy "Private Mailing Card" title for "Post Card". From the archives, you can see these two fascinating early 1900s postcards from the Manfred and Ethel Martin Postcard Collection. Do you have a favorite postcard?

Dance the night away! The Orpheus Hall was erected in Vernal in 1911 at today’s 100 South Vernal Avenue. It was the only hall in the entire Basin with a spring-loaded dance floor. Engineered with massive steel springs measuring 6.5 inches high and 3.5 inches wide beneath the floorboards, the floor absorbed shock and gave dancers a literal extra bounce in their step! Can you imagine floating across a spring-loaded dance floor?

Patrons also enjoyed movies, theatrical performances, and roller skating at the Hall. The Orpheus Hall was renamed the Imperial Hall in 1928. The dance hall served many fun-seeking patrons until its demolition in 1965.

You can learn more about the history of Imperial Hall in the Summer 2015 edition of the Outlaw Trail Journal!

Have you ever wondered who the first practicing physician in the Uintah Basin was? Meet Dr. Harvey Coe Hullinger. Born on December 2, 1824, Dr. Hullinger began his medical career in 1852 before settling in Uintah County in 1883. He practiced medicine in the Basin until 1925 and delivered over a thousand babies in Vernal. By the time Dr. Hullinger died in January 29, 1926, he had the distinction of being the nation’s oldest practicing physician.

To learn more about Dr. Harvey Cole Hullinger and other early Uintah physicians, grab your copy of Uintah Basin Healers: Prominent Physicians by Doris Burton today at the Uintah County Regional History Center or the Museum of Uintah County!
