Dr. J. Andrew “Andy” Edwards ’98 delivered an inspiring keynote address during Batten University’s Founders Day Convocation, where he was also honored as the recipient of the 2026 Beacon Award. His journey exemplifies the lasting impact of a Batten education.

The celebration continued with the presentation of the 2026 Alumni Awards, honoring Distinguished Alumnus Award recipient Tassos J. Paphites ’79, Alumni Service Award recipient Julie H. Kissell ’82, and Graduate of the Last Decade (GOLD) Award recipient Stephanie Gorham, MBA ’23.

We are proud to celebrate these outstanding alumni and honorees, whose leadership, service, and accomplishments reflect the excellence and lasting impact of a Batten University education.

At the beginning of each academic year, we gather to celebrate Founders Day, one of our most cherished traditions. This year is especially meaningful as we celebrate our first Founders Day as Batten University, honoring our history while embracing a new chapter.

The Founders Day Convocation and annual Alumni Awards presentation will take place Thursday, September 3, at noon in the Susan S. Goode Fine and Performing Arts Center. We are honored to welcome J. Andrew “Andy” Edwards ’98 as keynote speaker. Following his address, Andy will receive The Beacon Award, recognizing his character, service, and continued commitment to the University and his community.

The 2026 Alumni Award recipients are:
Tassos J. Paphites ’79 - Distinguished Alumnus Award
Julie H. Kissell ’82 - Alumni Service Award
Stephanie Gorham, MBA ’23 - Graduate of the Last Decade (GOLD) Award.

The event will also be livestreamed on the Batten University Digital Broadcasting Network and available through the link in our bio. Four high school students spent 10 weeks conducting hands-on chemistry research through Project SEED, a grant-funded, collaborative summer program hosted by Batten University, Old Dominion University and regional partners.

For the second summer, Project SEED, which is designed to provide students with meaningful research experiences and encourage them to pursue careers in science, brought together faculty mentors from three Hampton Roads institutions. Co-principal investigators Dr. Kyle Lambert of Old Dominion University and Dr. Kevin Kittredge of Batten University, along with Project SEED mentor Dr. Isiah Speight of William & Mary, guided the students throughout their summer research projects.

Students and alumni of the last 15 years may remember the "Note to Self" activity at Orientation, where incoming first-year students are given the opportunity to write notes to their future selves. These notes are then returned to them when they graduate, providing graduates a special opportunity to reflect on how much they've grown throughout their college experience. 💙

Thank you to our first-years for sticking with us through Orientation this weekend! We're so excited to see all that you'll accomplish here at Batten University!
