ODU's DNP Nurse Anesthesia Program is a 100 credit, 36 month program divided into an academic phase and a clinical phase. The first phase of the program is designed to introduce students to the basic theoretical knowledge and skills necessary for advanced nursing practice in nurse anesthesia. The second phase focuses on the clinical component, which is comprised of both general and regional anesth

esia techniques. Extensive clinical sites incorporate the graduate registered nurse anesthetist into the clinical management of the pediatric, obstetric, trauma, vascular, GI, GU, open heart, ENT, organ transplant, neurological and general surgical anesthesia. Multiple local primary sites give the student exposure to numerous practitioners with different backgrounds. We do not compete with anesthesiology residents at our primary sites. ODU provides the student with the academic scientific basis and clinical skills required to provide quality anesthesia care. Clinical instruction is provided by both CRNAs and anesthesiologists. Our graduates far surpass the number of cases required by the Council on Accreditation. The Program was established in 1995 upon the merger of local hospital programs. Nurse Anesthesia is one of several graduate roles within the Ellmer School of Nursing. Upon successful completion of the role, a Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree (DNP) is awarded and the student is eligible to take the National Certification Examination. Passage of this examination allows the graduate to assume the title of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) and a role as an advanced practice nurse. Clinical education is performed at various hospitals and ambulatory care centers locally as well as distantly providing a rich clinical experience. The ODU Nurse Anesthesia program is fully accredited by the Council on Accreditation for Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs through 2034. For more information visit our official website. 29 new faces started on campus last week. Welcome to the Class of 2029! Although they started virtually in May the Fall semester is the first time they are here together face to face. Today was picture day. The Atrium was a great backdrop and the morning light was beautiful. Can’t wait to get back the photos from the real photographers. Welcome aboard! We know you all will be a great addition to the NAP team! Ellmer School of Nursing at Old Dominion University

Special congratulations to Lyndsey Highlander Uvarov, CRNA. Lyndsey overcame significant challenges including having 3 babies (1 set of twins) during anesthesia school and a near death experience with her 2nd delivery to successfully complete the program and pass her boards on the first attempt. We are so proud of your determination Lyndsey although I think she would agree this pathway would not be one she would recommend. The Class of 2026 is now officially closed with a 93% first time pass rate, a 100% overall pass rate and 100% employment! Everyone overcame their own challenges along this journey to now be called ODU CRNAs!
