Regent University School of Divinity The School of Divinity serves students from many church traditions and backgrounds.

The Regent School of Divinity exists for the glory of God by providing education that seeks to be faithful to the Scriptures and emphasizes the renewing work of the Holy Spirit in order to train laborers who bear witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ. We desire to equip students to minister effectively within their own church traditions and various spheres of influence. In particular, we seek to serve students and churches within the spiritual renewal movement. As an educational and faith community we assume that students are active in ministry. Correspondingly, we seek to encourage their growth in: spiritual formation, theological and biblical integrity, the fruit and gifts of the Holy Spirit, and commitment to the Church and its outward thrust in evangelism and missions.

The School of Divinity was honored to welcome Bishop Chadwick Carlton and a delegation from the Temple of Healing Waters Church of God in Christ to Regent University.

Bishop Carlton serves as Lead Pastor of Temple of Healing Waters in Dulles, Virginia; Jurisdictional Prelate of the Republic of Korea Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction of the Church of God in Christ; Chancellor of Education for the denomination and President of the Charles Harrison Mason Theological Seminary.

While on campus, Bishop Carlton preached in Chapel, bringing a word that strengthened our community in its devotion to the Lord Jesus Christ and its calling to serve the Church. He also met with School of Divinity faculty for fellowship and conversation about our shared work of preparing leaders for faithful ministry.

We are grateful to Bishop Carlton and his delegation for their presence among us and for the partnership in the Gospel this visit reflects. Thanks be to God for the gift of the wider Body of Christ.

Monday afternoon in the Library Auditorium, the School of Divinity welcomed Dr. Lester Ruth for the inauguration of the Lester Ruth Contemporary Praise & Worship Collection.

In his special lecture, Dr. Ruth — research professor of Christian worship at Duke Divinity School and a leading historian of the praise and worship movement — traced the story of how contemporary worship came to shape congregations across the globe, drawing on the same decades of research now housed here at Regent.

The collection itself is a generous gift of Dr. Ruth's personal library, documented and curated by Regent University Library Special Collections, and now a dedicated resource for the study of praise and worship that will bless generations of students and scholars. The afternoon closed with the formal inauguration of the collection in the Special Collections Reading Room.

Our sincere thanks to Dr. Ruth for his years of faithful service, his teaching, and this lasting gift to the Body of Christ.

At the beginning of each month it is the practice of our dean to release a Dean's Address to all our students and faculty. For our October dean's address, Dr. Corne Bekker reflects on the 50th anniversary of the prophetic word spoken over Regent University on September 25, 1976, and calls our students to walk boldly into the "great and mighty task" the Lord has prepared for them. May God bless you richly!

Dr. Matisha Dentu, Dr. Jordan Jones, and Dean Corné Bekker recently presented at the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU) Doctoral Education Conference, hosted by George Fox University in Newberg, Oregon.

Their session, "Cruciform and Renewed: Forming Doctors for the Church and the Academy through a Theologically Structured Doctoral Residency," examined the Ph.D. in Renewal Theology and the conviction at the heart of the School of Divinity: theological rootedness, not methodological training alone, produces rigorous researchers, excellent writers, and faithful scholars.

That formation runs through a three-year residency sequence — DGEN 801, 802, and 803 — that carries students from entry through dissertation defense as one continuous arc rather than three isolated requirements.

Students formed by the Word and the Holy Spirit, grounded in the Trinitarian and Christological grammar of Biblical and Nicene Christianity, and oriented by the cross of Christ bring to doctoral research a disposition of cruciform faithfulness that no skills course alone can cultivate.
