For Houston native Leonidas Contreras, his first year at Baylor is just the beginning of a much bigger goal.

A Biology major with aspirations of pursuing neurosurgery, Leonidas chose Baylor for the community he found here and is looking forward to everything his college experience has in store.

One experience already on his Baylor bucket list? Going on a mission trip. And fittingly, he chose The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey as the feature film for his first year 🎬

A big congratulations to Baylor historian Dr. Elesha Coffman! 🐻

Dr. Coffman, professor of Baylor Department of History in the Baylor University College of Arts & Sciences, has been elected president of the American Society of Church History, one of the nation's leading organizations dedicated to the study of Christianity and religious history.

As a longtime member of the society, Dr. Coffman has spent nearly 25 years contributing to conversations surrounding faith, history and American culture.

Meet Emma Cantu, a first-year Baylor Psychology & Neuroscience major from McAllen, TX, who hopes to one day become a neuroscientist and further the study of epilepsy.

Baylor’s research opportunities and welcoming community helped Emma know this was where she wanted to begin that journey along with a longtime dream of becoming a Bear 💚💛

Outside the classroom, she’s already building an ambitious Baylor bucket list: study abroad, run the Bearathon and even go skydiving 🪂

And the feature film for her first year? Legally Blonde 💗 — because Emma wants this year to be about approaching new challenges with hard work, confidence and determination.

ICYMI 🎓 Three Baylor University College of Arts & Sciences faculty members have been selected by Baylor Interim Vice President and Provost Lee Nordt, Ph.D., to serve as 2026–2027 Baylor Fellows.

The Baylor Fellows program recognizes faculty across the University who exemplify excellence in teaching and share a commitment to advancing Baylor’s mission of transformational education.

This year, A&S is proud to have three faculty members among the 10 selected:

📚 Ginger Hanchey, Ph.D., senior lecturer of English and undergraduate program director for literature and creative writing — who will also serve as the 2026–2027 Senior Fellow

💬 Ashley Barrett, Ph.D., professor and graduate program director in the Department of Communication

We mourn the loss of former Baylor chemistry professor David Young following his passing last week at age 86.

What will tomorrow’s technology be made of? ⚛️

In the Baylor University College of Arts & Sciences, Dr. Julia Chan, professor of Baylor Chemistry & Biochemistry, is helping answer that question by designing and discovering new quantum materials with the potential to advance semiconductors, computing, manufacturing and other emerging technologies.

Her work also brings Baylor students directly into the discovery process, giving them hands-on research experience at the forefront of materials science.

MILES TO RUN. LIVES TO IMPACT 🏃‍♂️🩺🐻

Meet Daniel Ounda, a first-year Biology Pre-Med major from Tyler, TX, with plans to become a pediatrician.

Daniel chose Baylor for its open Christian values and warm campus atmosphere, and he’s already thinking beyond Waco for one of his biggest college bucket list goals: traveling across the United States to run marathons. 🏃‍♂️🇺🇸

When he’s not preparing for a future in medicine (or logging some miles), you might find Daniel reading WWII books and historical fiction. And if his first year had a feature film? He’s going with Greater, the story of Brandon Burlsworth. 🎬

Welcome to Baylor, Daniel! Here’s to a first year full of new experiences, plenty of miles and the beginning of your journey toward becoming a pediatrician 💚💛
