Jacob Mannen’s work ethic is simple: show up, work hard and do not make excuses when something goes wrong.

It is that mindset that has guided the Fletcher, Oklahoma, native in Texas State Technical College’s Diesel Equipment program at the Waco campus.

Mannen was recently awarded a $5,000 scholarship from the Independent Equipment Dealers Association. He was one of three diesel equipment students nationwide to get the scholarship.

The funding will support Mannen’s training in the Diesel Equipment program’s John Deere pathway as he prepares for the next step in his professional career. 🛠️🚜

TSTC’s Waco campus was proud to host the Texas Trucking Association’s 2026 Technician of the Year Contest on Saturday, May 30, at the Diesel Equipment building.

Twenty technicians rotated among stations testing their knowledge, from troubleshooting to electronics. Some of the industry sponsors for the stations were Cummins Inc., Eaton, and Yokohama Tires.

Kaiden Brown, a third-semester Diesel Equipment student from Waco, participated in the contest for experience, competing alongside the pros outside of the official scoring tally.

The top technician will be recognized at Saturday night’s awards ceremony at the Hilton in downtown Waco. The winner will move on to the Technology and Maintenance Council’s SuperTech Competition taking place in September in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

After the holiday weekend, it was time to get back to work.

On Tuesday, students learned about a locking differential on a John Deere-brand wheel loader and also how a stub shaft works, while others grasped relay circuit diagnostics.

These and other skills help keep the Texas economy moving by ensuring commercial fleets, heavy equipment and supply chains stay flowing.

Information from the American Transportation Research Institute indicates more than 90 percent of trucking companies in the country have 10 or less trucks. The institute says one of every 14 jobs in Texas are tied to the trucking industry.

In February, Texas State Technical College’s Professional Driving Academy relaunched at the Waco campus to teach residents and students in the Electrical Lineworker and Management program how to safely operate a commercial vehicle. The goal is to produce people eager to join the trucking industry with a state Class A commercial driver’s license in hand.

“We are not just teaching how to pass the test,” said Steven Clark, a TSTC Professional Driving Academy instructor. “We want them to see what it’s like in the real-world.”
