Last night was a special evening for Union Lodge No. 4 as we raised our first Master Mason in years, Brother Nikia Hill.

It was a unique Masonic experience in more ways than one. Brother Nikia learned his proficiencies the traditional way — mouth to ear — putting in the time and work necessary to advance through each Degree and arrive at this important milestone in his Masonic journey.

We also had the privilege of recognizing Brother Gary Timmons with his 50-Year Masonic Pin — five decades of dedication to the Craft. What a great contrast to witness in the same Lodge: one Brother celebrating 50 years as a Mason while another begins his first day as a Master Mason.

We had a fantastic turnout of Brethren, including one Brother who was able to witness his first Master Mason Degree since being raised himself just one week ago. We also welcomed quite a few first-time visitors, including MWB Leonard Waites, Past Grand Master of Prince Hall Masonry here in New Mexico. It was an honor to have him with us.

A special thank-you to our Lecturer, WB Bert Dalton, Grand Musician of the Grand Lodge of New Mexico. His beautiful piano playing brings a Lodge room to life, but his contribution goes far beyond the music. His knowledge of the ritual and willingness to put in the work behind the scenes help make evenings and Degrees like this possible.

Thank you to every Brother who made the journey and contributed to making the evening memorable.

And congratulations, Brother Nikia Hill. Being raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason isn't the end of the journey — it's the first day of the rest of your Masonic journey.

Welcome, Brother. Now the real work begins. 🔨⚒️

Another fantastic Stated Communication is in the books at Union Masonic Lodge No. 4!

Union Lodge is one of the most unique and historic lodges in New Mexico. We were one of the original four lodges that formed the Grand Lodge of New Mexico in 1877. Today, all but one of our members live outside Wagon Mound, traveling from Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Santa Fe, Las Vegas, and other communities to keep our Lodge active.

It is a wonderful reminder that a Lodge is not defined by its building—it is made by its members, properly assembled with the required implements.

Our next Stated Communication will be held on Tuesday, September 22, when Union Lodge will confer a Master Mason Degree. By dispensation, the meeting will be held at Sandoval Lodge No. 76 in Rio Rancho, located at 1420 Barbara Loop SE.

Please put it on your calendar and join us!

Dinner will be served at 6:00 p.m., with the degree to follow.

Congratulations to New Mexico’s newest Fellowcraft Mason, Bro. Nikia Hill! We had the honor of Passing him to the Second Degree of Fellowcraft at Union Masonic Lodge No. 4.

The Degree was well attended by brethren traveling from Estancia, Las Vegas, Santa Fe, Rio Rancho, and Albuquerque. In fact, only one of our members currently lives in Wagon Mound itself—part of what makes Union Lodge so unique. Our members willingly travel for hours to attend our Stated Communications and support the work of the Lodge.

We were also honored to welcome Grand Junior Warden RW Chuck Bass, who made his official visit to Union Lodge.

The evening began with a fantastic fajita dinner prepared by our Senior Deacon, Bro. David Muniz. Several residents of Wagon Mound pleasantly surprised us by joining us for dinner, making the fellowship even more memorable.

Bro. Nikia has shown tremendous dedication throughout his journey in the Craft. As a cross-country truck driver, he has used what little free time he has to study and learn his proficiency work. He even made it back to New Mexico in record time to ensure he would be here for his Degree!

Congratulations, Bro. Nikia, on taking this important next step in your Masonic journey. We look forward to watching you continue to advance in Light!

Union Lodge No. 4 and Chapman Lodge No. 2 share an important history.

Not only were we two of the four Lodges that came together to form the Grand Lodge of New Mexico in 1877, but our Lodges also once shared the same meeting place at Fort Union.

Chapman Lodge held its first meeting there in 1862, followed by Union Lodge in 1874. After cleaning Union Lodge today, Chaplain Burx Norrod and Bro. Tyson Navarette visited the remains of the building where both Lodges first met, standing in the northeast corner.

The two also decided to test the sundial to see how it worked. Sadly, it couldn’t tell the correct time—but even history seems to lose track of time occasionally!

It was a meaningful opportunity to stand where part of New Mexico’s Masonic history began and reflect upon the brethren who laid the foundations of our Craft more than 150 years ago.
