The wedge-tailed shearwater chicks at the Freeman Seabird Preserve have started growing their flight feathers, with the oldest birds starting to develop their outermost primary (P10)

Last week, almost all (98% or 41 of 42) of the monitored wedge-tailed shearwater chicks at the Freeman Seabird Preserve gained mass. The average mass this week was 472.4 g +/- 40.9 (SD), with a maximum of 555 g.

The models points to a “very strong” El Niño (Niño 3.4 anomaly ≥ +2.0 °C) from Sept-Nov through Dec-Feb. Strong-to-moderate El Niño conditions will persist into spring (March-May) of 2027.

Today's World Seabird Congress Hub Event was a great success: a diverse audience of 26 students, researchers, and conservation practitioners attended and spent 4 hours watching presentations on a wide range of topics. Shearwater fledging season began Tuesday and runs through Dec. 15; the Dark Skies program helps reduce light pollution and improve safe passage for fledglings and the number of fallen seabirds at the U.S. Navy installation has decreased significantly since it began.
