The Unfinished Ashlar
by Ron C. Nischwitz Sr.
5-17-26

Most people today try really hard to look real...
They post photos that look casual or act vulnerable on camera...
but you can tell it’s all been edited and planned out...
It’s a bit of a contradiction...
working so hard to look like you aren't trying at all...
In Freemasonry...
we look at things differently...
We believe that being a good person isn't a show you put on for other people...
It’s about who you are when no one is looking...
and how you treat others when you have nothing to gain...
This idea is worked on daily in everyday life...
It means actions over words...
Being genuine doesn't mean telling people you are honest...
it means actually being honest every single day...
There is inside work...
Just like a builder shapes a stone...
we work on our own character in private...
This is the spiritual labor of a Mason...
improving yourself from the inside out...
No audience needed...
If you only do good to get others to cheer for you...
it isn't real virtue anymore...
it’s just a performance...
True character is built stone by stone...
through the choices we make...
You don't need to prove your worth to the world...
if you live with integrity...
your life will show it without you having to say a word...
The goal isn't to look perfect to others...
but to become the person the Great Architect intended you to be.

Brethren… let’s talk about one of the most overlooked tools we’ve been given.

The 24-Inch Gauge.

Not just a ruler…
but a reminder.

A reminder that every one of us is given the same 24 hours in a day.

⏳ 24 inches.
⏳ 24 hours.

And how we divide it… determines the man we become.

—

Freemasonry teaches us to break that time down wisely:

🛠️ Time for your work
🙏 Time for your faith
👨‍👩‍👧 Time for your family
🧠 Time for self-improvement and rest

But here’s the hard truth…

Most men don’t fail because they lack ability.

They fail because they waste time.

Scrolling instead of studying.
Complaining instead of building.
Waiting instead of working.

—

A Mason doesn’t just carry tools…

He uses them.

Every day is a chance to shape yourself.
To chip away at the rough ashlar.
To become more disciplined, more focused, more intentional.

Because success—inside the Lodge and out—

Isn’t built in big moments.

It’s built in how you use your time when no one is watching.

—

So ask yourself tonight:

👉 Where did your 24 inches go today?
👉 Did you invest it… or spend it?

Because once it’s gone…

You don’t get it back.

—

Use your time like a Mason.

With purpose. With discipline. With intent.

🔨 Build something worth remembering.

To every Brother around the world…

Today, celebrate your mother.

📞 Call her.🤝 Hug her.❤️ Tell her you love her.

And if she is already waiting for you in Heaven…then sit quietly for a moment and have that conversation anyway.

Thank her.

For the sacrifices nobody saw.For the nights she stayed awake worrying about you.For the meals, the lessons, the discipline, the comfort, the prayers…and for every piece of herself she gave so you could become the man you are today.

A good mother helps build a man long before any Lodge ever can.

Many of us learned our first lessons in love, patience, charity, forgiveness, strength, and integrity at our mother’s side.

So today, Brothers… slow down for a moment.

Because time is undefeated. And one day, all we’ll wish for is one more conversation.

Happy Mother’s Dayfrom Blue Collar Freemason.
