We will explore the vital role of language interpretation in diverse settings where the stakes for communication are high.
--During a public health emergency, displacement due to conflict, or a medical or legal proceeding, individuals should be entitled to the services of a competent, and ideally professionally certified, interpreter.
--Yet too often a “monolingual mindset” endangers speakers with unmet communication needs.
--We will also consider the potential of artificial intelligence to fill communication gaps in the absence of qualified persons to do the work.
Moderator: Sabine von Mering – Brandeis University; Introducer: Leigh Swigart – Brandeis University; Panelists: Lissie Wahl-Kleiser - Harvard Medical School (interpretation in healthcare contexts); Katie Becker - Princeton School of Public and International Affairs (interpretation in Indigenous languages at the US southern border); Alice Delorme Benites and Romina Schaub-Torsello - The Zurich University of Applied Sciences (machine translation/interpretation for crisis communication with refugees in Switzerland); Ahmed el Khamloussy - International Criminal Court (interpretation in languages of lesser diffusion for accused persons); and Laura Kunreuther - Bard College (interpretation in Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya)
