To attend, or not to attend? Last year’s AOTA Inspire Annual Conference and Expo in Kansas City, Missouri expanded networks and sparked new ways of thinking. However, attendees were driven to reflect on the progression of the field of occupational therapy as discussions around the lack of diversity, offensive language, and explicit racial bias arose throughout the conference due to public discussions.

In response, GW students and faculty discussed their current efforts to lead positive changes surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion. Most recently, students and faculty weighed on the moral and ethical implications faced when considering attending the AOTA 2024 conference in Orlando, Florida, where laws are increasingly changing the social, medical, and educational landscapes.

Laughing is a great feeling but successfully completing a residency week (that included creating splints, learning from patients with prosthetics, and taking exams with manikins) is an even better feeling ✨🧘‍♂️👏.

It was an inspiring, insightful, and thought-provoking day at the for our GW OT faculty, students, and staff!

Our program director spoke on ‘The Rise of Men in ’ while others spoke on AI, cognitive rehabilitation, the evolution of pelvic health practices, gender affirming care, and more!

“My hope for the students is that they'll become changemakers in society, that they will be effective practitioners helping individuals create meaningful lives. But also my hope is that the students will break down some of these social barriers that are limiting opportunities for people to engage in meaningful life experiences and have the self-determination to make the choices that they can to lead these fulfilling lives,” said GW program director, Roger Ideishi, JD, OT/L, FAOTA.

The class excursion to the revealed how our lived experiences shape our ideas, views, and understandings of the world 🌍.

As first-year , Jenny (Jae Eun) said, “not everything is ‘black or white’… we live in a world full of ‘grey areas’ and there can be beauty in the ‘grey area’ even when it feels uncomfortable.”

Why would learning in Washington, D.C. be life-changing? 📚

🌍 You learn about (and engage with diverse communities) who will make you a more holistic practitioner that understands the various factors that affect someone's health.

💪 You learn about advocacy because empowering patients and helping them to realize their full potential goes hand-in-hand with supporting communities through advocacy. (Such as, advocating for the right equipment or advocating for accessibility modifications in public space, housing units, etc.).

📍 The nation’s capitol is where great OTs are made, change happens, and advocacy starts.
