#casofloresta | Despite Bukele’s propaganda of a “developed” #ElSalvador, his government uses its control over the courts and the justice system to displace tens of thousands of families from their homes, communities, and livelihoods.
The excess of power and widespread attacks against workers and marginalized communities is excused under through a war on gangs - instilling fear in those who organize against these injustices through the threat of arrest. Last week, prominent human rights defense organization Unidehc El Salvador came under attack with the arrest of their spokesperson #fidelzavala and dozens of members of the #LaFloresta community. Armed security forces raided their offices and the home of founding attorney, Ivania Cruz. This video from September 2024 helps provide context of this community’s struggle for dignified housing and includes comments from UNIDEHC lawyer, Rudy Joya. 🕯️ On January 16, #ElSalvador commemorated the 33rd anniversary of the 1992 Peace Accords. Salvadorans continue to defend their historical memory, despite Bukele’s political persecution of historic leaders like Atilio Montalvo, a negotiators of the peace agreement.
Montalvo has been politically imprisoned for 8+ months, along with other leaders of the Alliance for a Peaceful El Salvador arrested on false charges related to peaceful protests against Bukele’s dictatorship in the days before Bukele’s unconstitutional inauguration.
