On May 25th George Floyd was murdered by a police officer. Thousands have gone to the streets chanting his name and demanding change. This is not the result of just one “incident,” but decades of institutional racism and state-sanctioned violence.
It is not enough to just simply post about racism but to also be anti-racist. Stand against racism in your daily lives, from the casual offensive remark to the systematic means of oppression. If it is safe for you to protest, remember to respect Black leaders and uplift and amplify Black voices. If you have the means to donate, donate to charities supporting Black Lives.
In a predominantly white institution like American University, the goal of the Student Council of the Class 2023 is to uplift BIPOC voices. This means that when we say Black Lives Matter, we mean more than just a Hashtag. Black Lives Matter is a movement demanding an end to the devaluation of Black people as human beings. We will continue to call out injustice, both on campus and off.
With Solidarity,
Class Council 2023
