Georgetown University: Graduate Liberal Studies Degree Programs

Georgetown University: Graduate Liberal Studies Degree Programs The Graduate Liberal Studies degrees at Georgetown address the many facets of mind, spirit, and personality that contribute to your leadership potential.

In 1974, Georgetown University pioneered one of the first Master of Arts in Liberal Studies Degree Programs in the United States for part-time night school students. The Doctor of Liberal Studies Degree Program followed in 2005. We have the largest M.A.L.S. Program in the country and the only D.L.S. Program in academia. Georgetown University Graduate Liberal Studies Degree Program students examine

academic, professional, and scientific matters in the context of issues and values that excite human thought and inform human action. Classes are interdisciplinary and exploratory. The Georgetown University Graduate Liberal Studies Degree Program is the longest existing degree program of the School of Continuing Studies. Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (M.A.L.S.) students select courses from fourteen curricular fields, one of which is Individualized Study, and complete the master’s degree in two or three years. Doctor of Liberal Studies (D.L.S.) students focus their course of study, personally and professionally, around a particular theme and complete the doctoral degree in six or seven years. Classes are held week nights and weekends to support working students’ busy lives and schedules. The Georgetown University Graduate Liberal Studies Degree Program faculty are chosen from three principal areas: University departments, University programs, and a general pool of University-affiliated professors with active careers in the arts, government, humanities, and sciences. Discourse is central to the mission of Georgetown University and the active exchange of ideas, discussion and debate is encouraged on the university page. Facebook users are expected to engage with one another and post in a respectful and civil manner, consistent with Facebook's Terms of Service. Facebook encourages users to moderate discussions they find to be abusive by utilizing the "report" and "flag" features. Posted comments do not necessarily reflect the views or policies of the university. The university reserves the right to screen and remove inappropriate content and to ban abusive users from posting on the page. The types of posts that will not be tolerated include:

So, you’ve had an idea that you’ve tested and could be scaled… How can you convince top management to adopt and support it? What if there are opposing views within the top management team? How to navigate the different agendas and perspectives from other leaders before you can even pitch to the final decision maker?

In this hour together we will identify an idea that you’ve already tested and now need to sell to a senior leader (it could even be your own promotion within the organization); then we’ll follow a series of short exercises to map the influence landscape at your organization and create an alliance-building plan. You’ll end up with a replicable method that you can add to your innovation toolkit at work and in life.

Teaching MLK’s “I Have a Dream” Speech in 2022 - The first Mission in Motion post of 2022 invites the SCS community to participate in the University’s annual “Teach the Speech” initiative, which this year focuses on Dr. King’s iconic “I Have a Dream” speech. “As the United States continues to experience social, cultural, and political polarization around persisting racial injustices in all facets of society, MLK’s iconic 1963 speech presents a valuable opportunity to renew the discussion in 2022 and recommit to tangible actions at Georgetown.”

What’s Your Holiday Tradition?

It’s almost hard to believe, but the holidays are upon us! The time between Thanksgiving and the end of year always feels like a mad dash, but we want to take a moment to celebrate the diverse foods, customs, and traditions that make this time meaningful and special to you and your loved ones. To that end, the SCS Dean's Office team is curious to know:

What’s a must-have dish at your family table?

What’s a decoration you always put up around the home?

Do you dress up your pet for the holidays? (Photos are mandatory for this question.)

What’s an organization you try to support and/or volunteer at during the holidays?

We invite you to share your responses to the above and more in this brief Google form. Photos are a bonus! We may contact you to feature them on SCS’s social media accounts to celebrate our community during the holidays. Thank you in advance for participating!

Tomorrow we'll be hosting SCS Bookshelf: Design Thinking with Karen Hold.

What are leaders in your industry currently reading? What are the “must-haves” on their bookshelf? Join us virtually tomorrow on October 19 at 5:00-6:00 p.m. ET for a unique book talk (cliff notes provided) featuring author and Georgetown McDonough alumna Karen Hold, founder of an innovation consulting firm - Experience Labs. Karen will join Wendy Zajack, Faculty Director of the Design Management Communications program, where they will discuss some of the book's central themes and provide you with some tangible advice that will transform your design thinking skills. Come ready with loads of questions and join the discussion and the fun.

The Book:
Experiencing Design – The Innovator's Journey -- draws on decades of researching and teaching design thinking. Karen with co-authors, Jeanne Liedtka and Jessica Eldridge, have created a ‘how to’ guide for each stage of the design thinking journey. Ultimately, innovators need to be someone new to create something new. This book shows you how to make this actually happen step by step. Upon your RSVP you will be sent an excerpt via email.
