FIU in Washington, D.C. We are the FIU Office of Federal Relations in Washington, D.C. As Washington, D.C.

FIU’s Washington Office of Federal Relations works to advance our university’s mission and priorities in our nation’s capital. With critical decisions being made at the federal level that impact our students’ financial aid, research enterprise, international engagements and our ability to fulfill our role as an urban leader in the South Florida region, we’re engaged year-round so that FIU can remain WorldsAhead. In promoting our federal priorities to our champions on Capitol Hill, The White House and federal agencies, our team also engages our most effective advocates: our students, faculty researchers and alumni. Together we can all work to increase federal support of FIU and its initiatives, and while doing so, expand our national and international profile. is also home to a growing population of incoming students and FIU alumni, we’re glad to serve as an important connection between our Miami campuses and our growing Golden Panther network.

From drones and cybersecurity to batteries, advanced manufacturing, and more, we were thrilled to showcase our work at AUSA 2026 and highlight how FIU researchers are addressing critical national defense challenges.
We connected with organizations shaping the future of defense, including Lockheed Martin , Anduril Industries, Leonardo DRS, Palantir Technologies, , Day & Zimmermann, and The Boeing Company from companies developing new technologies to those putting them into practice.
These conversations help connect university research with real-world needs, opening doors for collaboration and highlighting the role FIU can play in advancing our nation’s security.

Meet Adrian Mangano, an FIU junior double-majoring in Finance and Business Analytics & AI, who is spending his semester in Washington, D.C., as a Hamilton Scholar and interning on Capitol Hill with Jared Moskowitz
Why Washington, D.C.?
As a FIU Business student, Adrian initially wondered how an experience in government would connect to his career goals. But through the Hamilton Scholars program with FIU’s FIU Honors College, he’s discovered opportunities to build professional connections, learn how government works and explore career paths he hadn’t previously considered.
What is he working on?
In Congressman Moskowitz’s office, Adrian helps with constituent correspondence, supports staff projects, attends briefings and prepares press clips.
He’s also working on a project involving FIU’s Extreme Storm Surge Simulator. Adrian helped organize an event connecting industry leaders and embassy representatives, creating opportunities to discuss FIU’s research and how Congress could support the project.
What is he learning?
From meeting professionals across industries to organizing events and building meaningful connections, Adrian has strengthened his networking, leadership and time-management skills while gaining insight into fields ranging from international affairs to health care and artificial intelligence.
Advice to students:
“Just do it.” Adrian encourages fellow Panthers to consider Washington, D.C., even if they’re still figuring out their career paths. With opportunities across so many fields, he says students can discover new interests by stepping outside their comfort zones and saying yes to new experiences.

What if soldiers could generate electricity directly from their uniforms? ☀️

As brings together defense leaders and innovators in Washington, D.C., FIU engineers are developing technology that could help reduce the weight soldiers carry in the field.

Backed by a $10 million investment from the U.S. Department of War, researchers at have developed SOLED, an ultrathin device that can both generate electricity from sunlight and emit light.

With soldiers sometimes carrying up to 20 pounds of batteries, this technology could eventually reduce reliance on traditional power sources and resupply operations.

Led by FIU professor Daniela Radu, the research demonstrates how university innovation can address real challenges facing our military.

FIU in DC visited the Assn. of the US Army conference today, where defense contractors, aerospace companies, military leaders, and researchers gathered to showcase innovations and explore opportunities across the defense industry.
With companies like Lockheed Martin,, Honeywell Aerospace, , and The Boeing Company in the mix, the conference offers valuable opportunities for FIU to network with industry leaders, build partnerships, and highlight how its programs are preparing students and researchers to contribute to these fields.
Through FIU’s College of Engineering and Computing FIU Engineering & Computing , NFSTC, and the Jack D. Gordon Institute, FIU is working to strengthen its presence, showcase its expertise, and connect its talent with organizations shaping the future of national defense.

Today, our G20 Fly-In students had the opportunity to hear directly from former President of Poland Andrzej Duda and Ambassador Rafał Kos, Special Representative for Commercial & Business Affairs.

Students gained firsthand insight into President Duda’s work with the G20, international diplomacy, and the role global leaders play in navigating complex economic and geopolitical issues.

From the classroom to conversations with global leaders, FIU students are getting a front-row seat to the conversations shaping the world.

Jannabel, a speech-language pathologist and researcher, is bringing her perspective to Capitol Hill as part of ashaweb Capitol Hill Day, advocating for the importance of speech, language and hearing services.
