What if seawalls could do more than just protect coastlines? 🌊🌱

and researchers are testing innovative textured seawall tiles designed to both reduce wave impact and create habitats for marine organisms along urban shorelines. The BIOCAP system uses 3D-printed modular tiles with grooves, pockets, and textured surfaces that mimic natural coastal environments.

Developed by FIU architects and marine biologists, the project aims to improve biodiversity, enhance water quality, and strengthen coastal resilience as communities face rising sea levels and stronger storms. We’re also proud to have a sample of the innovative seawall displayed here at the FIU DC office.

Funded by the and the , this research highlights how innovative infrastructure can help protect both communities and ecosystems for future generations.
