What does engaged learning look like at Cornell in Washington?

CIW fall 2024 students visited The National Museum of African American History and Culture. They were led by Prof. Ron Christie, who had an important role in the development of the legislation for the museum.

Cornell in Washington provides students with the opportunity to learn outside of the classroom. This is achieved through various opportunities such as internships and exploring Washington, D.C. Students analyze and reflect on their work, gaining an understanding of the context and structures of the policy and political world.

Meet Kate Zavuholnik! This semester Kate is interning at Wrestle Like A Girl. Read all about Kate’s internship experience below!

"I am the legislative intern for Wrestle Like A Girl, the governing body for girl's and women's wrestling in the United States. My job is to work with the NCAA to make women's wrestling an official championship sport, lobby key stakeholders, and support international sports diplomacy trips that center around gender equity. Through WLAG, I am also working with Cornell to bring a women's varsity wrestling team to our campus. I am coaching girls' wrestling practices at Sidwell Friends School and working as a coach and a women's advocate for Beat the Streets DC, a nonprofit that empowers the youth of DC through after school wrestling programs to overcome juvenile violence. Girls in sports become women who lead and the world needs more women leaders, now more than ever. It is an honor to be a small part of the growth of women's wrestling and I am excited to dedicate my life to empowering the next generation of women.”

Tune in NOW for the CIW story takeover by Oswaldo Grajeda! Oswaldo is a sophomore at Cornell double majoring in government and performing & media arts with a double minor in law & society and history. Read below to learn about where Oswaldo is interning this semester!

“I am currently interning at Cornell's Federal Relations Office, where I can meet and speak with congresspeople to understand their perspectives on policymaking and how they work to benefit their constituents. During my internship, I have had the chance to meet with national leaders and gain hands-on experience researching policies, attending committee hearings, lobbying for the university, and writing policy memos. This experience has allowed me to utilize my hospitality and empathy skills to further my career in policymaking and work towards becoming a lawyer, which has motivated me to continue working hard and giving back to the community.”

Meet Alyja Cousins! This semester Alyja is interning at the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia. Read all about Alyja’s internship experience below!

“I work under the Special Litigation Division at PDSDC, where I research the client's background. This includes where they lived, their family situation, and the BOP facilities they're being held at now or were held at in the past and this allows me to create memos for the head attorney for the case I'm working on. I also interview clients by legal calls as our clients are spread out nationwide. The people here at PDSDC are super chill and understanding as they are very open-minded and understanding, especially towards clients as well. There's a sense of passion that radiates from this place that makes me want to work harder.”
