Congratulations to Uju Nwaigwe on receiving the Politics/Public Service/Public Policy Award!

"Words that come to mind when I think of Uju: a true force to be reckoned with and a fierce friend and advocate. Uju never lets up and allows her passions to speak through absolutely everything she does. Georgetown's Black community was not the same without her presence; it was crafted better because of her commitment and care. I can't wait to witness the journey she will walk!" - Morgan Robinson

Congratulations to Professor Smith on receiving the Professor for Others Award!

""Professor Smith’s secondary curriculum taught me how to navigate this strange thing called college. Office hours were mandatory so we could learn how to build relationships with adults and ask for help. She scheduled field trips to the Smithsonian and invited us to her home for a home cooked Ethiopian dinner to build our comfort with DC. She took 45 minutes out of a lecture to teach us how to ask a professor for a letter of recommendation. From day one, Professor Smith spoke candidly about being a first-generation college-student. To her, nothing about a college education could be taken for granted and she wanted us to excel at it. Though it may have seemed obvious to many of my peers, as the child of two immigrants, it was this guidance that made Georgetown feel like home." - Adam Shaham

"What a difference a great teacher can make. When I first came to Georgetown, I struggled to find a place and to find myself. Professor Smith’s classes have made me challenge what I thought I knew again and again. For that academic guidance, I will always be grateful. But, it is outside the classroom that her support has meant so much more. She has always invited her students into her classroom, her office, and her home, guiding them, encouraging them, and giving them a sense of home away from home. Of the many great professors I have known at Georgetown, she embodies the notion that students are not an interruption to her academic work, but rather the purpose of it. Dr. Lahra Smith is a brilliant educator, and few are more deserving of this recognition than her. Professor Smith — it has been a privilege working with you and learning from you." - Anonymous

"Dr. Smith welcomed me to campus this fall with open arms, reminding me to feel empowered through my education in her Proseminar class about the Politics of Migration in/from Africa. Both in and out of the classroom, she is there for her students and always encourages them to reach their highest potential." - Lucy McAuliffe

"Dr. Smith is not only an incredible professor, she is also an individual who deeply cares about others. She demonstrates these qualities through her consistent support for her students present and past as well as her attention to her students’ overall success, beyond just academic." - Austin Zhang

Congratulations to Maya Stevenson on receiving the Seniors Great Impact on the Georgetown Community Award!

"Maya has held several leadership positions throughout her time at Georgetown. Most recently, she served as the Harbin 9 RA, President of GirlTalk, and as the Hoyas for She intern. She is kind, caring, and a true Hoya, role modeling behaviors that others should emulate to create a healthier campus culture. Maya is a star senior student and I, along with many others, appreciate her contributions to the Georgetown community!" - Jaime Brown

Congratulations to Lasya Rajan on receiving the Religious Leadership Award!

"Lasya is a leader in both LEAD and Dharmic life. She is committed to facilitating dialogue about diversity, intersectional identity, and social justice. Trained as a facilitator from her work in LEAD, Lasya is skilled in leading critical dialogue that pushes participants to think about social justice beyond identity politics. As a leader of Dharmic life, Lasya understands that racial and religious identity cannot be separated and so encourages critical contemplating of both in religious life. Under Lasya's leadership, the gaps between our multifaceted and numerous identities become smaller." - Heejin Hahn

Congratulations to Gwendolyn Pearson on receiving the Staff for Others Award!

“I am honored to nominate Gwendolyn Pearson for this award. Not only does she perform exceptionally in her role as Executive Assistant for the Office of the Vice President and CHRO of Human Resources, she also lends her time and her talents to various departments across campus. Gwendolyn partners with the events team in President DeGioia’s office to support the Employee Service Awards and the President’s Excellence Awards. She has been requested by the President’s Office to appear onstage with President DeGioia to deliver awards to hundreds of recipients. This was not something that was previously asked of our Human Resources Department. Gwen is also the Vice President of Operations for the Georgetown Women’s Alliance, where she supports the President, Erick Cohen. Within this role, Gwen is also a part of the mentorship program, where she supports Dr. Melyssa Haffaf, Program Director for the Gender+ Justice Initiative. As if this isn’t already a full plate for the campus community, she also serves on the Advisory Committee for the Slavery, Memory, and Reconciliation campus initiative. I am consistently amazed at the care and concern that she has for the success of this University and the support that she has for the individuals that she leaves. Her footprint is seen across all campuses, and I am very proud that she is a member of this department.” - Anonymous

Congratulations to Jennifer Loo on receiving the Women in the Arts Award!

“Jenni has led several efforts to make the performing arts more accessible to women, Asian Americans, and Asian American women. As a resident of the Womxn in the Arts Magis Row House, Jenni celebrates womxn artists and has organized community events such as 'Asian American Screenwriting' and the 2019 API Heritage Month Dinner Art Share. In the play she directed 'The Wolves,' Jenni cast multiple Asian American women students who had never acted in a play before to encourage everyone, including novices, to embrace their creative sides. Jenni also starred in the play "John," which explores an in*******al relationship between John and Jenny, who is a Chinese American woman (yes Jenni played a character named Jenny). Jenni is committed to critically reflecting on the dynamics of race and power in the arts and artistic communities and to integrating creative expression into the daily lives of the Georgetown community.” - Heejin Hahn

Congratulations to Edilma Yearwood on receiving the Women in Healthcare and Medicine Award!

“Edilma Yearwood is currently a chair of the Department of Professional Nursing Practice in the NHS, but her background in teaching, research, authorship, mentoring, and service is extensive. She is an ANCC certified Clinical Nurse Specialist in Child & Adolescent Psychiatric Nursing with over 30 years of experience, and she has used this role to give a platform to many vulnerable communities in the field of healthcare. Minority and other vulnerable communities are the populations who face the worst consequences of the lack of adequate health care, and her contributions in this field have helped uplift and empower these groups so they can achieve the right to a happy and healthy life. Her courses and presence on Georgetown have helped students see the importance of diversity and inclusion in health care and teach how the lack of such can adversely affect someone's quality of life.” - Nickie Demakos

Congratulations to Jennifer Sugijanto on receiving the Community Service/Social Justice Award!

“Jenn is the leader of the Asian American Studies campaign at Georgetown - a movement that has remained dormant for years. She single-handedly brought the movement back to life with no budget. No money. No team. No working committee. No framework. No predecessors. When we say 'Asian American Studies Movement' we all know that we really mean 'Jennifer Sugijanto.' Jenn's efforts led to the creation of the first Intro to Asian American Studies class and inspired multiple professors to teach Asian American content in their courses. Jenn always works to center underrepresented Asian American voices in the conversation and strives to integrate an intersectional perspective into Asian American organizing. Jenn has always been loyal to her values of radical racial justice and her dreams of deconstructing the orientalist, Eurocentric, white supremacist institutions of academia. Jennifer Sugijanto has poured hours and hours into Georgetown’s Asian American community. When she graduates, she will leave a large hole in Asian American organizing that won’t be filled again for a few more years (if ever). She is a full-time student activist who has done more for diversity and inclusion efforts at Georgetown as a single person than administrators have done in years.” - Heejin Hahn

a worthwhile read featuring advice from female leaders on how to cultivate a close network of female professionals

We need to reverse the stereotype that women don’t support other women. There is research that shows women in particular benefit from collaboration over competition. Here is advice from women leaders on how to find and cultivate a close network of female professionals.

"Women who want to change the world, or to go as far as their talents or interests take them, sometimes have to resist or reject that little voice in their head that stokes our insecurities and suggests how we should or shouldn’t behave."

Our writer says it's time for women to reject inferior status, demand equality, and unapologetically revel in their ambition and success.

Want to go to Capitol Hill and advocate for gender parity in conflict resolution and post-conflict reconstruction?

The Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security is currently offering the opportunity for Georgetown students to meet with staffers on the Hill to encourage legislators to fully fund and ensure the implementation of the Women, Peace, and Security Act of 2017. The WPS Act requires U.S. Government agencies to consistently consider gender when developing and executing conflict-related initiatives abroad. While the bill being passed was a major milestone for the WPS community, in many cases it is not being implemented. This advocacy campaign will bring this to the attention of staffers in targeted Hill offices.

Anyone interested in getting involved will receive a thirty minute training on how to communicate with staffers and speak confidently on women, peace, and security issues. Both the training and the meeting on the Hill will be set around students’ schedules.
