Hoya Battalion: A Legacy of Service 🇺🇸

Since 1789, Georgetown University has been a pillar of education—and from the very beginning, Hoyas have answered the call to serve. Georgetown cadets have fought in every major conflict since the War of 1812, even finding themselves on both sides during the Civil War.

The first Georgetown student, who eventually served in Congress, was also the first Georgetown College cadet in 1791. For more than 230 years, this battalion commissioned more than 5,000 officers, including a former Chief of Staff Army (GEN George Casey). Over that time, commissioned officers from the Hoya Battalion commanded soldiers at every level in every major campaign and conflict fought by the United States.

In the 20th century, Georgetown Army ROTC expanded its reach, welcoming cadets from Catholic University of America, American University, The Institute of World Politics, and George Washington University, shaping leaders in military, diplomacy, and global affairs.

These images—from the late 1800s to today—capture a proud tradition of service, sacrifice, and leadership.

From history to the future, the Hoya Battalion continues to lead.

At the Hoya Battalion of Georgetown Army ROTC, we know that a true leader is forged through both mental and physical strength. That’s why our Army Officers and Non-Commissioned Officer Instructors are mastering Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu 🥋—skills that will directly enhance the combat readiness of our future Army Officers. 💪

What the Cadre learn here, they pass on to our cadets, preparing them for whatever challenges come their way. Hand-to-hand combat is a crucial part of what we do, and it’s more than just technique—it’s about developing resilience, discipline, and the ability to stay calm under pressure.

From the mat to the battlefield, we train to lead, lead to serve. 🌟

Cadet Spotlight: Heesung Kim 🤺🏃🏻‍♂️

MSII Cadet Heesung Kim (George Washington University ‘27) exemplifies leadership as a cadet, student, and athlete. As the team leader for the Hoya Battalion’s Army Ten-Miler team, he successfully completed the annual race as an MS1, demonstrating dedication and endurance. Cadet Kim also plays a key role in organizing the Annual Hoya Half Marathon in the spring semester.

In addition to his athletic achievements, Cadet Kim serves as the captain of GWU’s intramural fencing team, leading them to victory in last year’s tournament.

For Cadet Kim, completing the Army Ten-Miler was more than just a race—it was a pivotal moment that strengthened both his physical and mental resilience. He also developed lasting relationships with fellow cadets, extending beyond the GW Company.

“I’m excited to support my fellow cadets in reaching their fitness goals as we gear up for the big race this October,” said Cadet Kim.
