Why are they doing this in West Virginia?

Similar forums will occur Saturday in Boston and Phoenix, according to Farooque, who was connected with the WVSTPI through Mountain State leaders, including House Speaker Roger Hanshaw, R-Clay.

"I wanted to put West Virginia in people's consciousness, because many don't understand West Virginia's role in the founding of the National Science Foundation," Farooque said.

The NSF was supported by Sen. Harley M. Kilgore, D-W.Va., a Harrison County native who served from 1941 to 1956.

The Green Bank Observatory, in Pocahontas County, was established by the NSF in 1956.

"Some might question what our rural, mountainous, somewhat isolated, less populous state has to offer to American science. They need look no further than the Green Bank Observatory to see a powerful example of West Virginia’s important and valuable contributions. And these contributions in radio astronomy are possible because of our rural, mountainous, isolated, less populous location, not despite it.

Our rural identity and relative isolation can be strengths, not disadvantages. During the public forum on Oct. 3, let’s make sure the American Science @250 project hears from West Virginians loud and clear — and with no interference."

- Roger Hanshaw, R-Clay, Kensey Bergdorf-Smith and Jay Cole

On Oct. 3, a team from Arizona State University’s American Science @250 Project will conduct an all-day public forum in West Virginia at the Charleston Convention Center.
