UDC College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) and the UDC Community College’s “Grab ‘N Go” Student Food Pantry partnered to bring healthy eating tips to the students at the UDC Community College. Herbert “Chef Herb” Holden, Culinary and Nutrition Education Assistant, and Marshelle Hailstock, Project Coordinator, Outreach and Recruitment, provided nutrition education and information on CAUSES academic and land-grant programs. Chef Herb prepared a delicious fall butternut squash soup, which was sampled by students, staff, faculty, administrators, and the Dean of the UDC Community College, Dr. Marilyn Hamilton, who gave it her stamp of approval.

Welcome to the Team: Solomon Broadnax, Program Associate for Project-Based Learning, Center for Urban Resilience, Innovation and Infrastructure (CURII).

Solomon's new role with UDC-CAUSES will entail building sustainable frameworks that expand educational and career pathways for students in underserved communities. Solomon plans to continue his education and strengthen his commitment to public interest advocacy and systems-level reform.

Meet Sam Van Horn, Project Assistant for Soilless Systems at the Center for Urban Agriculture and Gardening Education.

Sam’s background includes improving food accessibility. In his new role, Sam will focus on climate, sustainability, and food systems. Outside of work, Sam enjoys hiking, camping, cycling, and endurance sports. 🚴‍♂️⛰️🏕️

The District of Columbia Building Industry Association (DCBIA) hosted its 33rd Community Improvement Day at East Capitol Urban Farm. The event brought together community members, UDC-CAUSES staff and faculty, and real estate development professionals who volunteered their time and expertise to beautify the .

The East Capitol Urban Farm was constructed in 2015 by a team of partners including the University of the District of Columbia’s College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability, and Environmental Sciences (UDC CAUSES), the DC Housing Authority (DCHA), the Urban Waters Federal Partnership (UWFP), the District of Columbia Building Industry Association (DCBIA), the District Department of Energy & the Environment (DOEE), Groundwork Anacostia, and the DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities (DCCAH). UDC-CAUSES was pleased to host Dr. Konstantine Mastorakis, Vice President of Nationale Piloti, President of Safe-Drive, WGES Global Athens 2026 Ambassador, and Co-Host of the WGES Global NOVA Awards of Greece, at the Van Ness campus and Firebird Research Farm in Beltsville, MD. The visit focused on sustainable agriculture, food systems, environmental stewardship, and international collaboration. Led by Dr. Sabine O’Hara, Distinguished Professor, this initiative establishes the foundation for future applied collaboration between U.S. and Greek institutions.
