It was an extraordinary honor for Howard University to welcome His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the 16th Asantehene and King of the Asante People, for a Distinguished Royal Lecture presented in partnership with the Millennium Excellence Foundation.

His Majesty’s address offered a powerful reflection on the unity of African people across the globe, the preservation of cultural heritage, and the enduring strength of the African diaspora.

The gathering brought together Howard University leadership, faculty, students, and distinguished guests for an evening rooted in history, culture, and shared purpose. At a time when our histories and institutions face increasing challenges, His Majesty’s message affirmed the importance of protecting heritage and strengthening the bonds that connect African people throughout the world.

We extend our profound gratitude to His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Millennium Excellence Foundation, and all who helped make this historic occasion possible.

Our students are making history through language, music, and cultural immersion!

This summer in South Africa, Howard University students in the Zulu Language & Culture program recorded an original song inspired by the June 16, 1976 Soweto Uprising, featuring lyrics in both isiZulu and English—a powerful tribute to resilience, remembrance, and cross-cultural learning.
