International Organizations, Law & Diplomacy

International Organizations, Law & Diplomacy American University Washington College of Law, Program on International Organizations, Law and Diplomacy

The Program on International Organizations, Law and Diplomacy (PIOLD) is designed to foreground the challenges that lawyers face in working for public, private, and nongovernmental clients in international organizations including the World Bank Group (WB), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the Delegation of the European Union (EU) to the United States of America in Washington, DC. PIOLD o

ffers the same cutting edge training for lawyers interested in practicing in the World Trade Organization (WTO), the Word Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the UN Human Rights Treaty Bodies in Geneva, Switzerland. These new challenges beg for creative lawyering that can address new institutional solutions through heterodox strategies. PIOLD provides legal and soft skills for lawyers who need to navigate the changing architecture of global governance in a multicultural environment.

Update - You can now register for IOLD's DC based summer courses!

Here's a link to the calendar/info on the courses:
https://www.wcl.american.edu/internationalorganizations/courses.cfm

As a reminder, the Registrar also has a new summer course registration process for the Washington courses due to the new ABA Standard 310 that says that you can earn a maximum of 2 credits per week.
Because of this, you will need to register manually for the specialized summer courses by emailing [email protected] and include your name, AU ID #, and the course name and number. Please find all the course details at https://www.wcl.american.edu/internationalorganizations/courses.cfm. If you try to register for the courses on MyAU you should get a message asking you to email the request.

Geneva participants will be registered by us directly, no need to worry!

The calendar is subject to change. Class sessions take place at WCL unless otherwise noted. Note that some courses overlap and it won’t be possible to take both. This version updated

This Wednesday, Mar. 1st, main campus (SIS) is hosting, "Realism Redux: International Economic Law, the WTO and Investor-State Dispute Settlement in the Trump Era" from 3:45-5:15 in SIS 300.

Dr. Tucker will be discussing his research on the proposed economic and trade policies of the Trump administration and their international ramifications.

Dr. Todd N. Tucker is a Fellow at the Roosevelt Institute. His interests revolve around global economic governance, including dispute settlement and the domestic regulatory implications of international trade, investment, and tax treaties. Dr. Tucker's PhD research at the University of Cambridge examined the role of ideas about economic development in investment treaty arbitration, and his academic work has been published in books and journals by Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, Brill Press, and Edward Elgar. He was previously research director for international issues at Public Citizen, and his popular writing appears regularly in Politico, Time Magazine, and other outlets.

Interested in International Law? The Geneva Program gives you the unique opportunity to hear daily lectures for three weeks from officials at the United Nations, The International Labor Organization, The World Trade Organization and The World Intellectual Property Organization. Daily access to these institutions and the invaluable knowledge and resources you will receive is a privilege only available to our school.
Don’t miss this opportunity and dedicate your 1L summer to it with two simple steps:
1- Apply for the Geneva Program Today, and
2- Come on Feb 6th for internships in int’l law in the areas of Trade, Intellectual Property, Labor and Human Rights.
Going to Geneva does not preclude you from doing a summer internship, on the contrary. The program is design as a professional development opportunity to enhance your skills in international law and your professional network here in DC and abroad.
The majority of the students who attend do internships here in DC before and after the program. Don’t wait and complete your applications today before it opens to non-WCL students next week. Seats are limited!!
