Family Weekend 2026 | Academic Showcase Recap

On Friday, October 9, the College of Engineering, Physics, and Computing welcomed families to Pangborn Hall for an Academic Showcase as part of Family Weekend 2026.

Families had the opportunity to explore our academic spaces and laboratories and connect with the faculty, staff, and students who bring engineering and technology to life.

Highlights included:

🔹 A behind-the-scenes look at our Makerspace 3D Printing Laboratory
🔹 Engaging conversations with faculty, staff, and students
🔹 A display of past Senior Design projects and models in the Student Design Center

The showcase offered families a glimpse into where their students learn, collaborate, innovate, and prepare to become tomorrow’s engineering leaders.

Thank you to all the families, faculty, staff, and students who joined us! We look forward to more opportunities to share the College’s work and showcase the impact of our academic programs.

Join Us for the 6th Annual Hard Hat Ceremony & Senior Design Poster Exhibition!

The College of Engineering, Physics, and Computing invites you to celebrate an exciting milestone in the academic and professional journeys of our students.

The Hard Hat Ceremony will welcome our newest cohort of civil and environmental engineering students, including dual-degree students pursuing civil engineering and architecture. During this special tradition, students will be formally recognized as they receive their own hard hats and safety vests, symbolizing their entry into the engineering profession.

The evening will also feature our senior engineering students as they present their multidisciplinary senior design projects, highlighting the innovation, collaboration, and technical expertise developed throughout their academic careers.

Students, faculty, alumni, families, industry professionals, and employers are all welcome to join us for an evening celebrating engineering excellence and the next generation of engineering leaders.

Superconductors, magnets, and levitation in action! 🧲

Our students recently experienced quantum levitation firsthand using superconductors and magnets cooled to near-liquid nitrogen temperatures. ❄️

A huge thank you to Dr. Biprodas Dutta—a 20+ year physics professor and founder of Catholic University’s Materials Science and Engineering program—for sharing the science and history behind superconductivity during this live demonstration.

🎉 Congratulations to Grace Connors!

We’re thrilled to share that Grace Connors, a Computer Science Ph.D. student at The Catholic University of America, has been selected for the AI for Civic Cohesion Fellowship by the Civic Health Project for her AI research project, Nehemiah’s Way.

Selected from a highly competitive pool of applicants, Grace’s project will receive an unrestricted $10,000 grant and a place in a distinguished cohort of leaders using artificial intelligence to strengthen civic cohesion and connection.

Nehemiah’s Way is a human-in-the-loop, AI-enabled platform designed to scale structured dialogue on contentious issues, help large communities listen to one another, and synthesize small-group conversations into shared themes.

This recognition highlights Grace’s hard work, vision, and impactful research within the College of Engineering, Physics, and Computing.

Please join us in congratulating Grace on this outstanding achievement! We look forward to seeing how Nehemiah’s Way develops and makes an impact in the months ahead.

What a wonderful evening in Glen Mills, PA, with our College of Engineering, Physics, and Computing (CEPC) alumni, families, and friends!

A special thanks to our Board of Visitors member, Ed Delate, for graciously hosting us at The Crown Tavern.

Our newly appointed dean, Steve Brown, shared an update on the College and his vision for an exciting future ahead.

Making an impact on the pitch and in the classroom! ⚽

On September 23, Catholic University Men’s Soccer fought to a 3-3 draw against Stevenson University in Owings Mills, MD, keeping their undefeated streak alive at 6–0–1.

Highlights from our CEPC student-athletes:

🔹 Donik Elshani (Sophomore, Computer Science) — Struck in the opening six minutes for his team-leading 3rd goal of the season.
🔹 Corey Magro (Senior, Civil Engineering) — Anchored the midfield for all 90 minutes, providing key defensive support throughout the match.
🔹 Luke Lillis (Senior, Environmental Engineering) — Delivered the game-tying goal in the 79th minute to help secure a 3-3 draw against Stevenson.

This strong start has propelled Catholic to No. 9 in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll—the highest national ranking in program history! 📈

Donik, Corey, and Luke embody the work ethic, teamwork, and commitment it takes to excel as Division III student-athletes. Congratulations to them and the entire team on a historic week! 🔴

First Place at NILA Summit!

We’re proud to celebrate Evan Onate, senior mechanical engineering major and chapter president of Catholic University’s Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), for earning first place overall in the Case Study Competition at the SHPE NILA Presidents Summit in Houston, Texas!

Representing Catholic University at the summit, Evan teamed up with student leaders from universities across the country. Working together, they tackled a modernization challenge by developing an innovative AI-integrated web and mobile platform to better serve SHPE members nationwide—beating out 19 other teams for the top spot.

Evan’s collaborative effort earned our SHPE chapter a yearlong virtual mentorship program with ExxonMobil professionals, as well as complimentary registration for Evan to attend the SHPE National Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana this October.

Congratulations to Evan on this outstanding achievement and for representing Catholic University on the national stage! 👏
