To every intern who missed the Metro and still made it on time, who took on the manual spreadsheet project nobody else wanted to touch, who said yes to impromptu social media managing simply because of their age: we can’t wait to see where you go from here.

Happy National Intern Day to those who celebrate. You’re smart, ambitious and thoughtful, and you impress us every year with what you can do. Your effort and your drive to pursue your goals inspire the W&M community and excite us for the future you will lead.

Summer in D.C. is always special, but this year is one to remember: 25 years of The Washington Center (celebrated during W&M Weekend), America’s 250th, groundbreaking on our expansion, and 68 interns making their mark across the city!

“It just seemed a very natural thing to do.”

That’s how former William & Mary President Timothy J. Sullivan ’66 described the decision to establish a W&M presence in D.C. over 25 years ago.

A lot has changed since then, but the mission remains remarkably familiar.

Long before universities across the country began building D.C. centers, internship and applied learning hubs, and pathways into public service, W&M saw an opportunity to bring its community closer to the people, institutions, and ideas shaping our world.

These photos capture the Center’s earliest days. Today, that vision has grown into a year-round home for applied learning, alumni engagement, thought leadership, and community in the nation’s capital.

The Center was founded on a simple belief: students learn differently when they are immersed in the places where decisions are made, organizations are built, and public life unfolds.

As we celebrate 25 years, we’re looking back at the people, places, and moments that helped shape W&M in Washington.

Which detail in these photos takes you right back to the early 2000s?

This month, join acclaimed author, former Washington Post journalist, and longtime professor Paul Hendrickson for a two-day workshop exploring how photographs can unlock memory, history, and storytelling.

Through writing, discussion, and museum visits, participants will learn to look more closely, notice more deeply, and uncover the narratives hidden within ordinary and extraordinary images alike. Hendrickson’s poetic, immersive style reveals how images can launch, deepen, or transform a story. His approach is collaborative, warm, and driven by a belief in storytelling as both a craft and a calling.

No prior experience needed. Just a willingness to be thoughtful and have fun.
