As the 193 graduates crossed the stage on Healy Lawn, family and friends celebrated the achievements of students earning bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees across Georgetown’s nursing programs. Reflecting on her own nursing journey, our commencement speaker and honorary degree recipient Mary Wakefield, PhD, RN, former acting deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, recognized the impact the class of 2026 will have on patients, communities and the future of healthcare.

Berkley School of Nursing faculty celebrated the extraordinary accomplishments of their undergraduate and graduate students at the School of Nursing Tropaia ceremony on May 14. Joanna Ranelli (G’26), a graduate of the dual Nurse-Midwifery and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner program, delivered the student address and encouraged fellow graduates to carry Georgetown’s values into every aspect of their careers. “Cura personalis is not passive compassion, it is active responsibility and commitment,” said Ranelli. “You are not just clinically prepared…You are intellectually rigorous. You are ethically grounded. You are formed in a tradition that demands reflection and action.” Find out more about the ceremony and see highlights at https://nursing.georgetown.edu/news-story/tropaia-ceremony-2026/

On May 14, Berkley School of Nursing held the annual Pinning and Blessing of the Hands, marking important rites of passages for graduates in their chosen professions. At the Pinning Ceremony, graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing received their Georgetown University nursing pins, a tradition for nurses entering the field. Later that day, graduates from the Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP) and Nurse Midwifery/Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (NW/WHNP) programs came together for the cherished and time-honored Blessing of the Hands ceremony. During the ceremony, graduates presented their opened hands to faculty to receive essential oils, reminding them of the therapeutic benefits of human touch.
