What does it really take to become a nurse? And who gets the opportunity to lead?

In a candid conversation with Dr. Reneé Roberts-Turner, Dean Roberta Waite shares the realities behind the profession, from her own unexpected path to the systemic challenges shaping the future of nursing.

Together, they explore the faculty shortage, financial barriers to nursing education, the policies influencing access, and why challenging the status quo is essential to building a stronger, more equitable profession. Dean Waite also shares why nurses have more power than they often realize to influence healthcare and drive meaningful change.

This is a conversation every current and future nurse should hear.

Rebecca "Becca" Levy's path to becoming a women's health nurse practitioner was far from linear. She describes flunking out of three community colleges only to learn later that she had undiagnosed ADHD. She built a career as a paralegal before deciding, at age 30, to start over in nursing school, right at the height of COVID-19.

Her first year as a nurse was spent caring for COVID patients, but she kept her sights set on women's health.

Today, Levy (G'26) provides reproductive and gynecologic care at a federally qualified health center in Houston, serving mostly Hispanic, low-income patients. She spends extra time finding discount pharmacies and coordinating care, because she knows a $17 difference in a prescription can decide whether a patient gets the medicine they need.

“I almost would rather burn out fighting for my patients than stop caring,” she said. “At the end of the day, my goal is simple: meet people where they are and help them get the care they deserve.”
