🌍 Expand Your World—One Conversation at a Time 🌍

Meet Madeline Shantz, a sophomore at American University majoring in CLEG—that’s Communication, Legal Institutions, Economics, and Government—an interdisciplinary program in the School of Public Affairs that blends politics, law, media, and economics.

This spring, she joined the English Language and Training Academy (ELTA) as a Conversation Buddy.

“I wanted to add more volunteering to my schedule—and ended up gaining so much more. I've learned about cultures I may never have encountered and formed meaningful connections across programs and backgrounds. It’s opened my mind to new perspectives and experiences.” Special thanks to Maddy for sharing her ELTA experience!

✨ Whether you're looking to build confidence in English, engage in real conversations, or connect with other students, ELTA gives you the chance to grow your language skills and experience meaningful cultural exchange—all in a supportive, welcoming community.

This week, we wrapped up our Conversation Buddy Program and celebrated the amazing volunteers who helped our students thrive in academic discussions, led by Professor Susan Kay. 🗣️✨

Throughout the program, ELTA students and volunteers had dynamic conversations about important topics like natural disasters, search and rescue efforts, the role of robots and animals in helping society, and the impact of the internet on learning skills. 🌍🤖💬 They also experienced a meaningful cultural exchange, gaining deeper insights into each other's traditions, holidays, and celebrations. 🎉🌎

We presented each volunteer with Certificates of Appreciation as a small token of our gratitude for their time, effort, and dedication. 🙏💐Thank you for making a lasting impact on our students’ language skills and confidence! 🌍💬

Stay tuned for an upcoming interview with one of our amazing volunteers, where they share their experience and why they chose to support our ESL program! 🌟
