Chi Eta Phi Sorority is a professional organization of registered nurses and nursing students, founded on October 16, 1932. Aliene C.

Chi Eta Phi Sorority is a professional organization of registered nurses and nursing students. Ewell, RN organized the Sorority on October 16, 1932 with the assistance of 11 other courageous registered nurses. The charter chapter, Alpha, was organized at Freedman's Hospital in Washington D.C. for two specific purposes: (1) elevating the plane of nursing and (2) increasing interest in the field of nursing.

This week, we celebrate, support, and uplift Black mothers and birthing people throughout their breastfeeding and chestfeeding journeys. Through education, advocacy, and community support, we can help create healthier beginnings, strengthen families, and support generations to come.

Breastfeeding is love. Black breastfeeding is legacy.

🧠 **On This Day in Health History: August 25**

In 1982, scientists proposed a groundbreaking idea: **What if a disease could spread through a protein instead of a virus or bacteria?**

At the time, the idea was revolutionary.

Scientists later called these abnormal proteins **prions**. Prions can cause healthy proteins in the brain to change shape, creating a chain reaction that damages brain tissue.

This discovery helped scientists better understand rare but serious brain diseases, including Creutzfeldt Jakob disease in humans and what became widely known as “mad cow disease” in cattle.

🔬 Why does it matter?

This research changed the way scientists thought about how some diseases develop and spread and ultimately influenced medical research, disease prevention, and even food safety.

More than 40 years later, the study of prions continues to help researchers better understand diseases of the brain.
