The Asian Studies Program mourns the passing of Professor David I. Steinberg, a leading scholar of Myanmar and former director of Asian studies at Georgetown University, who passed away on December 5, 2023, at 96. Over seven decades in diplomacy, think tanks, and academia, he brought insight into Myanmar’s history, culture, and political crises, shaping policy discussions and journalistic coverage worldwide. A pragmatic advocate for engagement, he urged cautious but consistent dialogue with nations like Myanmar, North Korea, and Iran. His work inspired countless students and policymakers, leaving a profound impact on Asian studies and international relations. We honor his legacy as a bridge-builder and visionary whose dedication to understanding and dialogue continues to guide us.

Salamata Bah (’24), graduating this week with a master of arts in Asian studies, has developed her academic and professional vision far beyond what she expected when she came to the Hilltop.

“Prior to pursuing Asian Studies at Georgetown, I was concerned about being pigeonholed to Northeast Asia and the Korean Peninsula,” Bah says. “However, due to the flexibility of the program and the diversity in expertise by the faculty, I was able to expand my interests and explore all of my intellectual curiosities.”
