Georgetown's School of Health has named Matthew M. Kavanagh, PhD, chair of the Department of Global Health.

Kavanagh directs Georgetown's Center for Global Health Policy & Politics and previously served as deputy executive director and special advisor at UNAIDS. His research examines how law and politics produce inequality, particularly in pandemics and outbreaks from HIV/AIDS to Ebola and COVID-19, and how policies and institutions can better prevent and respond to future health crises.

Dean Christopher J. King calls him "an accomplished scholar, a thoughtful leader."

Kavanagh succeeds Jennifer Huang Bouey, MD, PhD, MPH, who has positioned the department for continued growth and success since 2021. Kavanagh says he is "honored to have the opportunity to lead the Department of Global Health in this global moment of rupture and transformation" and build on the foundation Bouey and their colleagues established.

Today, Georgetown University will begin accepting the Common Application for students applying to the university for fall 2027, in addition to the independent application, which opened on June 1st.

Students will have the option to submit either the Common Application or the independent application when applying for admission to Georgetown. Both applications will have an early action deadline of November 1st, 2026, and a regular decision deadline of January 1st, 2027. https://bit.ly/4w4mCBv

Getting the right cancer treatment often starts with the right test. But new Georgetown research shows that many Medicare patients still aren't receiving the genomic testing that helps doctors match them to the most effective therapies.

The study, published in JAMA Network Open, looked at nearly 400,000 Medicare beneficiaries with lung, breast, colorectal, prostate, or endometrial cancer. Testing nearly tripled between 2016 and 2023, but use of advanced next-generation sequencing stayed low, and rates varied by age, race, ethnicity, and geography.

The takeaway from lead author So-Yeon Kang, assistant professor of health management and policy: insurance coverage alone may not be enough to bring precision medicine to everyone who could benefit.

Meet Phyllis Liu (H'27), a Human Science major and one of three inaugural DisCover Fellows. Her research examines medical debt as more than a financial issue. She's exploring how it acts as a structural barrier that shapes daily life for disabled people and those living with chronic illness. Through a disability studies lens, Liu will trace how financial toxicity intersects with healthcare access and social inequity, adding a needed voice to conversations on disability justice and health equity.

The DisCover Fellowship is a joint effort between the Disability Studies Program in the Georgetown University College of Arts & Sciences and Georgetown's Disability Cultural Center, supporting student research with mentorship, funding, and a spring showcase.
